I'm really hoping to catch a kong-ming lantern festival on one of my upcoming Asia trips. I hear they do it in Laos as well, but unfortunately, not while I'll be there in October... sigh...

In Indonesia, best bet is in March during the Waisak Festival at the Borobudur Temple.
I would suggest Thailand, shold be more frequent there.

I've spent time in Thailand and will be back in October, but again... my timing sucks for lanterns I keep coming before or after the lantern festivals. My desire to avoid the large tourism crowds apparently outweighs my want for the festival, HAHA

But seriously, thanks for the tip! There are a few spots in Indonesia that I would really love to shoot. It is pretty high on the "to-do" list. Do you know of good locations in Thailand for light festivals?

Yes. The Borobudur temple in central Java, Indonesia.
Every year the celebrate for 3 days. Great opportunity for photography.
