Description My final render and some detail shots of "Little Bot Bunny" for the Blender Cookie Modeling Challenge . Design by David Revoy .

I added a few details that weren't necessarily in the original reference. Most of it relating to how parts joined together. Anywhere two different parts met, I tried to have one part insert itself into a socket of the 2nd part, instead of having the two parts intersect into each other. I think it adds a touch more realism and makes it that much more believable.

I threw in a seamless background and some basic 3-point lighting with a white key light, warm fill light, and a cool back light. I think the subtle bit of color from the lights add a nice touch.

Please feel free to rip apart my work in your critiques. I want to improve as an artist (and thicken my skin, haha). Thanks!

Ooh… I’m loving this thing. Not sure how you cam up with this, but its looking awesome!
The only thing that I’d make a suggestion on is that your details make the bunny look like heshe’s been sculpted out of clay rather than piece together with metal. Maybe this isn’t such a problem or its because of the white coloring? From what I’ve seen, when machines are pieced together, they have deep creases (and shadows) between separate pieces.
Awesome job! Good luck, Have fun!
BUNNY!

Thank you! I actually didn't come up with the design. That credit goes to David Revoy. But regarding the clay/metal look, I'll try to keep your suggestions in mind when I get around to texturing and any additional details beyond the original concept. I made this for a modeling challenge, so I didn't want to spend too much time texturing when it wouldn't be considered anyway. I'll see about where seams would be appropriate. Or maybe he just has a molded plastic shell over his internal metal bits? That would be the easy way out!

Sure, sounds fine. ^^

Wasn't sure how far you wanted to go, so I just said the thing that stood out for me the most. XD

All thanks go to David Revoy for that department. Great artist!

Wow, great modelling, seriously!
The only thing letting it down is presentation, It looks as if it's made out of Styrofoam
I'd just recommend finishing it with more texture work, grime in the crevices and all that
Also, I think the red eye would look quite good if it glowed
None the less, a great model! Well done

Thanks! I totally agree with you about the texturing. I plan on painting and adding some weathering down the road. I didn't do anything more than a basic metallic-ish material because I created it for a modeling challenge, so the organizer was going to remove the textures when he reviews it anyway. I just wanted something flashier than a plain clay render but still basic, haha. The red eye does have a very *slight* glow (without it, it's way darker), but I agree that a more obvious one would look better...but not going so far as to turn him into a red flashlight, of course!

Ahh right, I didn't know about the no texture constraint
I'd like to see your finished renders of this anyway!
Ha, a sentient robot rabbit flashlight could be quite interesting!

Not so much a constraint as irrelevant. I was in a time crunch anyway. I submitted my model 8 or so hours before the deadline the next morning. My wife wanted me to call it done after that and go to bed after a week of late nights modeling, haha!

wow awesome work sticking to David's ref sheet! phenominal!

The only thing i would look at improving is the Iris, I cant even pick what it is exactly i would start with...

HeroNgauv In reply to Saeblundr [2011-12-22 04:47:15 +0000 UTC]

I may change the iris in the future as well. I like the idea of a bladed iris, like on a camera lens. I just didn't want to stray too far from the reference this go around.

Also, this was my first time using the Cycles rendering engine. I wish my video card was new enough to support gpu rendering (CUDA 1.1 vs CUDA 1.3), because the cpu rendering is SLOW. The eye was particularly painful to render because it needed so many samples to render relatively noise-free. This render had 5000 samples, and it still looks a teeny bit noisy. Contrast that with just a couple hundred samples for the white metal to look good. Oi!
