Description -- it passes.
(Love that quote)

I took a Studio Art Therapy course this past week and made a lot of interesting art that was very different than what I usually do. It was amazing to loosen up--it really served my actual work well.

This is a self-portrait btw.

Wonderful! I wish I could take a class lie that!
Like that she is somehow looking towards the light laving the black in the back. like the purple flower/ribbon thing there, but what is it for? Also like the written bit in there... works well!

I love the way you combined the media. dandy job. The proportions of your face are great, you could totally model.

Wow! That's truly impressive. Seriously, that's awesome. I really like the shading job you did too, especially around where your face meets your hand, with that sorta over-exposed light. Makes it look like you're looking out a window.

Thanks...it was nice to loosen up a bit. I don't really use watercolors all too often so I was extremely careful not to make it too strong...a lot of watering down and layering.

Yeah, I can definately see all of that layering. Looks really time consuming.

The time melts away. It's relaxing, really.

Oh yeah, that's how it usually goes for me too. I'll start up a movie when I start working on a drawing, then it feels like I just blink and the movie is over... and I've polished off a 24 pack of Mountain Dew.

I'm a big fan of movies as I work...but when you work with oils it's not a good idea to eat or drink unless you want to inadvertently poison yourself. Although a 24 pack of Mountain Dew comes pretty close to drinking turpentine.

WonderDookie In reply to hever [2007-01-16 07:56:42 +0000 UTC]

I've always considered Mt. Dew to be more chemically similar to Anti-Freeze. I have been known to eat while oil painting though, and it always makes my food taste real wierd.
Most of the time when I tell artsy people that I watch movies while I work on stuff, they always react real violently, like that's totally out of the question.

hever In reply to WonderDookie [2007-01-16 13:46:03 +0000 UTC]

A lot of artsy people are full of bullshit...if watching a movie makes your work progress, then watch a movie.
Oh, and your food may be tasting weird because some oil paints have lead in them. Try to be careful with that. I had a friend who was munching on some snacks in the studio, wasn't paying attention and ended up sticking her kneaded eraser right in her mouth. This was the reason she decided never to use the lead white.

WonderDookie In reply to hever [2007-01-16 23:37:08 +0000 UTC]

You see, that's why I use Titanium white. I kept mistaking the lead white for toothpaste.

I did almost drink out of one of my watercolor cups one time, thinking that it was my water. That would have been really gross.

Oh, we've all been there. And if anyone says they haven't, then they're a liar.

Too true. I wonder how many people have been poisoned in that same way.

The only critic I have is that it almost looks as though your fingers are attatched to your nose because of the colour... but what can you do? It's much better than anything that I could do.. you're a really awesome artist. I like the purple flowers and the gold adds very nice touches.
