Description My favourite little girl cousin! This was initially my fav shot of the entire trip, but after I played around with it a bit, something about it seemed off. Any suggestions? It also looks really grainy to me, does that have to do with the ISO? Anyways, enjoy

All crits and comments are greatly appreciated!

Grain was ISO but it looks like it was needed. I think the color is a bit too much on the magenta side.

Yeah, at the time I really had no idea how to use my camera or what I was doing. It was all kind of trial and error. Also the time when I was playing around with photoshop. I should fix it now and re-upload. Thanks!

This is a very nice picture. I don't bother it looks a bit grainy. This can be due to ISO-number (I can't see what the ISO-number is but when it's more than 400 sometimes you can notice the socalled grains. Solution: use some extra light (maybe a flash, but not direct because of overexposure of some parts). Maybe the composition could have been better is her right leg was still bended and still touching a higher stair.
Nevertheless: I think this is a very good picture.

Thank you so much I really appreciate you're comments and crits. Yeah I didn't know how to adjust the ISO, but I heard it could cause grainyness if it were too high. Thanks for the tip on how to cure that! Yeah, too bad I couldn't go back and try again. Thanks again!

With your new camera it is possible to choose the ISO when not using 'automatic mode'. I use it often when I have to make pictures in 'darker' places and no flash is allowed (musea) or the reach of a flash isn't big enough (churches). This way you can make pictures at a higher shutter speed so there is less or no motion blur.

Ohh alright! Thanks so much, that helps a lot. I didn't really understand exactly what ISO did, but I think that what you just told me will help me out next time I am shooting. Now I just have to find out how to adjust it onder:

It's the same feature as with 'classic' film. Normal films are 100 ISO, but in winter I always used 400 ISO so I could make pictures at the same shutter speed but with less light. Or with slower shutter speed but with 4 times more DOF.
Wirh a digital camera it's the same: when you put it on 1600 ISO then you have lots more DOF with the same shutter speed (but more grain in the picture). Of course this only works in manual mode.

correction: with 4 times more DOF should be with 2 'stops' more DOF (which means for instance that you can make a picture with diaphragm 11 instead of 5.6).

The stairs and the "barriers"'s directions make my eyes look at your cousin. Lighting is good.. well done !

WHat kind of lens you had?
I like this, but it makes me sad that the perspective isn't so dynamic.

Thank you for your crits and comment ! I used my AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm. Well I'm glad you liked it, what about the perspective didn't you like? I thought it was rather dynamic. Thats okay though! I just want to learn how to make it better for next time .

dErasmus In reply to hidden-glow [2006-08-11 17:16:24 +0000 UTC]

It could have been more dynamic, if you had used little bit wider lens, so that the girls foot would have looked more massive and the dynamism of the perspective would have been really clear to see. :B
Of course, many of photographers tries to avoid the exaggeration, but I think that it makes it easier to see the point or the idea of the picture.

Ahh now I understand.. Yes! I agree. I wish I could have, but I actually just got my camera last week and haven't yet gotten any extra lens' for it. I would love to get a wideangle or fisheye lens sometime soon. They're a bit out of my price range right now though. Good suggestion though!!
