Description After the collapse of the Golden Age following WWII, Spectacular tried to cash in on the Western Genre with "Western Tales". Frontier heroes like Gambler Jones and Kiowa Princess replaced the Freedom League, Jetpack (I), and Heatwave (I)as mainstays in the Spectacular stable.

The publication of "Seduction of the Innocent" brought an era of puritanism to comics as well as the dreaded Comic Code Authority. Spectacular's owner, Dewey Cheatum was called to testify before Congress, and in a rare moment of lucidity, told the Senators where to stick it and what to stick it with....

By 1958 the Silver Age had begun with DC's creation of the Barry Allen Flash and Marvel's entries just around the corner. New Spectacular EIC, Driftwood Quackenbush decided to up the ante and changed the venerable Western Tales to Sultry Western Tales. Its focus would be on more risque stories, that on more than one occasion, included social commentary and a fair amount of progressive thinking.

Case in point Sultry Western Tales #36 which featured the usual "strong" women but also an African American woman in a leading role. So enjoy this rare cover from the Spectacular archive.
