Mathilda is a very quiet, intimidating woman. The brooding, "I'll snap your neck if you look at me wrong" air that hangs around her is just a tad off putting and she doesn't mind being left in peace. When you really get to know her you quickly figure out that the edgy outer shell gives way to an even edgier inner shell.
If you do manage to pry your way into her heart you might regret it. She's fairly civil around strangers but with people she's close to she pulls no punches. Mathilda doesn't hesitate to tell her friends and comrades just what she things about their plans (or just them really). However, it's almost always more affectionate than genuinely cruel. She'd sooner die (or kill) than let death take her loved ones.
Speaking of killing, while it takes a lot to wipe away that calm facade, hell hath no fury like a Mathilda scorned. It may take her some time to get even but she always does. And Mathilda always makes sure whomever has crossed her regrets it.

History:

Mathilda was born into... An odd little community. It was "ruled" by a bunch of powerful psychic families that gave protection to "lesser" people in return for work. It was almost feudalistic in nature with the psychic families regularly "rescuing" the villagers under their "protection" from bandits that were in reality paid to keep the villagers under the families' thumbs. Mathilda Atropa was born to one such family. Her mother was tenacious young Gothitelle named Klaria Atropa and her father, a Scoliopede named Halmund, was part of the Atropa family's personal guard. She was paid little attention to as a child having been born out of an affair. Klaria experienced little backlash seeing as she'd already born four other heirs for her family. It wasn't until Mathilda began to display a real psychic prowess that people started looking her way.

The Atropa family was quick to launch her head long into proper schooling and, more importantly, psychic training. In particular, they began teaching her the old Gothitelle art of star mapping/navigation and lifespan prediction. Mathilda was... A little too young. Her psychic gift that had gotten her so much attention was beginning to feel more like a curse. She could never unknow the ever fluctuating dates of her loved ones deaths.
The only safe haven Mathilda really had at this point was her hand maiden, Jeanette. A plucky girl around her age, Jeanette was all things good packaged in one little Floette. They were... A little closer than mere friends and the two often fantasized about running off together and exploring. However, as luck would have it, the Atropa family caught wind of these plans. They sent Jeanette away.  Mathilda had no idea where until later in adulthood when she learned, quite on accident, that serfs that acted out were sold off to slaver groups.

Fast forward several years, Mathilda is now eighteen and totally dead inside. The compound was boring. Her family was boring. The serfs were boring. The colorful band of traders that pulled up were- actually not that bad. It wasn't unusual for the settlement to receive traders but this rowdy gaggle of feathered folks was something else. One bird in particular just wouldn't leave her be. His name was Jethro and he was the single most annoying person she'd ever met. Shortly after introducing himself he declared that he'd made a bet with his "amigos" that he could woo her before they left the settlement. She scoffed, told him he'd die trying, and walked away. He was persistent but nothing he said mattered much to her until the last day of his caravans stay. He made a deal with Mathilda. If she'd share one dance with him during his group's "goodbye" festivities then he'd take her with him when he left.
She stepped on his toes quite a bit but it was the beginnings of an odd sort of friendship.

Jethro wasn't all he claimed he was turns out. At heart, he was a conman. Jethro was a conman that owed some money to the wrong people and Mathilda's gifts as a navigator were his ticket out of debt. It took a lot of pleading for her to agree. The idea of transporting some... questionable goods across the feral ridden wilds was terrifying at best. They ended up finishing the job in one piece and Mathilda discovered something a little alarming. She'd enjoyed the rush a little too much. Her budding addiction to danger and Jethro's bad decision making skills eventually led them into joining up with a gang. The Crossbones had plenty of work for them. The two of them got pretty chummy, or at least as chummy as you can in a gang, with another member, Ezequiel.

At some point in their nearly seven year partnership in the Crossbones the two of them grew close. Very close. As in "we sleep in the same bed almost every night" sort of close. Would you know it, at twenty-six years old Mathilda found out that she was expecting. Mathilda wasn't all that happy about it either. If not for Jethro's insistent begging she probably would have dropped the child on a door step and forgotten about it. They couldn't stay in the gang. With a final, very ambiguous, farewell to Ezequiel they hit the road. They did their best to cover their tracks. Eight months later, Harlem was born.

Mathilda was not the best mother. She loved her daughter from day one but her tendency to be emotionally distant combined with her bitterness at leaving a lifestyle she enjoyed left a rift that never quite healed up. For twenty-one years they traveled around as a happy merchant family. Harlem was ignorant of her parent's past sins and they able to give her a relatively peaceful childhood. Until that past finally came back to bite them in the ass. Mathilda saw Jethro's death moments before it happened and fled with Harlem before her daughter's death could come to pass as well. Harlem had every right to be angry with her and Mathilda didn't stop her from leaving.

She's been causing as much trouble for the Crossbones as she could this past month but now it's time to make sure her negligence hasn't cost Harlem her life.

Mathilda is going Home.
