Description Taken at Bridge End, Rastrick, West Yorkshire.

While waiting for a train to cross this bridge/viaduct, for another comparison photograph, this beast appeared.

It turns out to be a Harsco rail grinder, and is one of only five in the UK. So it was yet another case of being in the right place at the right time.

Nice shot!

We get rail grinders about once a year behind my house CSX West Shore Line). I like the sound the trains make afterwards on the freshly-ground track. It kind-of sounds like the gears on a streetcar.

Thanks Frank. As I said, it was just luck that I was there at the right time.

This is the first one belonging to this company that I've seen, and I don't think it was actually working, because it seemed to be travelling a bit too fast. It was possibly just making it's way to where it was needed.

The ones I've seen in action move very slowly and produce showers of sparks.

In that case it definitely wasn't working.

There's only 5 belonging to Harsco, but I don't know if there are any more belonging to other companies.

We have come a long way since the Stockton to Darlington rail opened in 1825.
I like the whole composition Bob....N

It is a long way in a relatively short time, though the Uk hasn't really kept up with the rest of the world.

Thanks Neil. As I said it was for another of the Rastrick comparison photographs, so this spot being the nearest that I could achieve, to the original, the composition should really be attributed to the original photographer.

Like the composition with the streetlamp perfectly lined up with the frame and the tracks disappearing behind the branches. Nice colours too!
