AppearanceKostra is large and imposing - tall for a doe and with a muscular, heavy build. She has a calm stillness about her, rarely fidgeting, and cuts an almost statuesque figure when not bursting into deadly action. Her hide is criss-crossed with the scars of antlers and teeth that mark her as an experienced and high ranking Blackwood warrior. A long, strong single point antler adorns her brow outside of spring, and in autumn and winter she sharpens it on rocks into a deadly spear. Recently her eyes have been turned milky white after being blinded with widow's peak sap.

PersonalityKostra is cold, quiet and unforgiving. She exudes confidence and deadly force. Should any one of her soldiers or witches fail to complete their duty, they will be on the receiving end of her quiet wrath. She has no ambition to be Queen, but knows full well that no other fawnling in the herd could be General. She does not need to demonstrate her dominance by anything other than simply being there. She is disgusted by weakness, but sees it as her duty to eradicate it by making the weakling in question strong - whether that’s by training the pathetic creature herself or throwing them to the mercies of her warriors and witches to purge them of their frailty and make them strong. She hopes that by becoming general, she might train and bring the army of Blackwood together cohesively enough to be the force she knows it can be with the right leader - strong enough to finally invade one of the neighbouring kingdoms.

Both a tactician and a fighter, Kostra has all the skills needed to be a highly successful general, as well as navigate the political climate of Blackwood. Politics is hardly her favoured engagement, but she has more than wit enough to pay attention to the mutterings of the herd and react appropriately. She approves of Skoll as king, feeling that their priorities align in many areas, and saw the wisdom in his decrees of 759. She has fewer opinions about Deyanira, knowing less of her, though her position as Skoll's mate and willingness to take on the duties and responsibilities of the queenship are positive points - plus Kostra feels a certain camaraderie for the similarly tall, heavy doe far more than she did for her small, odd predecessor.

Kostra is not by nature a very emotionally open fawnling, and tends to keep opinions and feelings to herself unless the situation calls for them logically. She is also rather blunt, and has little time for others' personal issues that she feels aren't relevant to the army. As a result she makes few friends, but because of her skills and frank fairness she has a wide following of respect in the herd. Fawnlings closer to her usually include those who have gone on several raids with her or fought alongside her several times, and built up a mutual understanding.

Born with Hexes and Curses as her principal magic strain, Kostra has developed it thoroughly into a battle art and is now highly adept. When not fighting with tooth, hoof and horn, she has the ability to give whole sections of a battle serious illnesses such as pneumonia, heart murmurs or pleurisy as quick as a word, or to place voodoo charms on a future field of battle to sway the outcome. She wants to revive the somewhat underused art of Hexes and Curses, and has gathered together a mouse "farm" over the years that she keeps in order to experiment with - particularly with longer-lasting curses, and in future the art of cursing a bloodline, which will be much easier to observe the effects of on a quick-breeding animal.

Kostra's herb knowledge comes into use both during and after battle: from smearing her calcified, sharpened horn with deadly nightshade in autumn and winter to healing her comrades' injuries.

HistoryKostra was born a strong, healthy fawn in 746, and quickly pushed into independence and her coming of age ritual as early as possible. Everyone expected her to complete it effortlessly, so when she returned empty handed her parents were more than a little shocked, and distanced themselves from the hind they had had such high hopes for. Kostra's salvation came in the form of a warrior doe who devoted much of the following year to training the young hind thoroughly and ruthlessly. Though it was the most difficult year she had ever experienced - or will ever, she still thinks, privately - it more than paid off in a huge wolf slaughtered at her next coming of age trial. Her tutor's influence would forever remain imprinted on her, long after the doe was killed and Kostra herself an established warrior: Weakness is a temporary state. If the flesh is weak, so long as the mind is strong, it can be overcome. If the mind is weak, so long as the flesh is strong, it can be overcome. A weakling who wants to become strong will succeed or die. A weakling who does not want to become strong can only die. She rarely speaks of this time in her life any more, and most of the herd who were there at the time respect her too much to bring it up.

The vast majority of her life has been spent as a warrior or raider, travelling largely between the three borders of Blackwood either defending or infiltrating, and she has had little reason to explore the east beyond herb-gathering. The rest of Blackwood, however, and the mountains bordering it, she knows quite well.

Kostra has not yet borne a fawn as her duties have taken up her time so far, but intends to honour King Skoll's request as soon as she is in a position to do so with a suitable mate. She will be happy to suckle a fawn until weaning - she would not be able to range great distances that year, but with her mate watching the fawn and a good second-in-command to cover more ground she could do her job of general perfectly well from central Blackwood - then most likely hand primary care of the fawn over to her mate after a year and be able to range further. (Blackwooders, I presume, would be more likely to celebrate rather that vilify a nursing mother general so long as she was still present and active.)

Kostra's plans on becoming general are to bring Blackwood up to what she sees as its potential strength: the strength it could muster if all of its able members were trained and brought together as a fighting force. She intends to take note of all foreign fawnlings living in Blackwood who have survived their trial, and to train them in harnessing their magic for the good of their new herd and to further Uir's plan. She intends to seek out loners and Blackwooders who rarely engage with the herd to train them and encourage them to become more of a part of the herd again. She knows this will take many years, but her resolve is strong and long-lasting, and her one true hope - bordering sometimes on an obsession - is to finally see the Western Isles under the rule of the Mother. Sadly for her, this is unlikely to come to pass, but she does not know this. What she does know is that once Blackwood is united, they will be a force to be truly feared.
