Description
I was laying under the deck on the cold wooden floor, when all of a sudden a cry alerted me. "Land ahead!" yelled a male voice, and I sat up so fast I almost hit Jason in the forehead. "Sorry," he said, holding out a hand. I gladly took it, and he hoisted me up with his firm grip. Jason handed me an Athena helmet and my dagger. I muttered a thanks as one of the Hephaestus kids said we were getting close. Running up the ladder, I rushed to the bow of the ship, clutching the golden figurehead of Festus, squinting my eyes for land. White pillars bordered the grass, and I recognized shapes moving back and forth in a similar pattern, and realized they were guards. With big weapons.
All of a sudden, a big blue flame burst from the top of a pillar directly in front of us, and one by one, each pillar followed suite. Fire was a signal, a way to communicate. I prayed that they were just doing that to get rid of bugs, but of course it was only false hope as I saw the guards rushing up and down the pillar stairs.
I looked at the mast of our boat, and yelled to the crew members, "Take down the sails! They think they are under attack! Who in all of Hades picked red as the flag?"
"There was that accident remember?" Piper said,  untying the knot that held a rope in place at the bottom of the mast, "That big paint accident? The one where the Ares kids thought we were supposed to paint it red, and we couldn't waste anymore time with the sails?" I nodded, remembering how mad Chiron was when he found out, but it was an honest mistake by the Ares cabin.  People started to take down the sails, rushing as we quickly approached the pillars' range. I kept my eyes on the shapes, hoping they wouldn't start to panic, and noticed that big figure's was being pointed at us. "Duck!" someone yelled as a big cannon was shot at us. A strong hand pulled me down, and an arrow hit the ground where I was stood.
Clarisse was kneeling beside me, telling me to be more careful. I nodded, and my head switched gears as more arrows flew the air, though none of our ammo left the ship. I crouched, and ran to the stern of the ship, yelling for Leo, who was controlling the boat, to give me a megaphone. He reached into his belt, pulled one out, and threw it to me with one hand. I caught it, and ran for the figure head again, dodging arrows that flew by. Piper followed behind me, telling me I was crazy, but let me handle it. I climbed on the golden head, holding onto a horn with one hand, the bullhorn in the other, as Piper held my legs, anchoring me to the boat.
"We come in peace!" the megaphone boomed, a bit of static in my voice, "We bring no harm!" I was yanked backward as a cannon exploded in the water, sending bits of wood flying. A piece of shrapnel cut my face, but I barely felt it. My hair was flying wildly as another cannon blew up on port side, nearly missing Jason as he held onto the railing. I changed tactics as soon as another explosion sounded near the Crows' nest. Jumping over barrels that had gotten loose, I sprinted as quickly as I could to the nest, latching on the rope and started to climb. Piper was trying to keep up with my fast movements, and by the time I got to the top, and the boy who usually did the spotting was on his way down, Piper was just climbing over the wood into the nest. The scope lay on the floor, rolling around each wave we hit. I scooped it up, and held it to my eye.
Teens in purple shirts were scurrying around, handing ammunition to each other, firing arrows and cannons. Other Romans on the ground were preparing for a battle, all of them either clad in shining armor, or on pegasi. The cavalry were circling the ground troops, keeping them tight and together. I cursed, and pulled the bullhorn out again, "I repeat! We come in peace! This is the leader of the Athena cabin, and I promise we come for no harm! We just want to talk!" I felt like an alien, yelling "We come in peace, take us to your leader!"; which was basically our situation.
"Ready!" A voice boomed as we were only a 300 hundred yards away from land, "Aim!" Jason! I thought, searching for the teen. I saw him with his golden lance Leo had fixed, getting ready to attack. "Jason!" I yelled, trying to get his attention. He looked up, "I need you to go find Reyna! You said she was a leader, right? Use these! Red means distress, blue means you found her!" and I threw two smoke balls to him.
What do I know about Romans?  I thought as Jason jumped onto a vortex of wind, and a voice commanded to fire, and a boulder was launched into the air, but thankfully missed our ship.
I ran through what I knew about Romans from reading. They like war, they like fighting, violence, they're vicious. Power, destruction, borrowed Greek architecture, chariot racing. "Clarisse!" I yelled, searching the deck for her. Her blonde, bandanna covered head bobbed up from under the deck, "Yeah? Better be important, Annabeth. We're having trouble down here with the water leaks!"
"We need to fire back!" I replied, "They respect power and strength! Find a leader of some sort, a captain or archer. Don't aim to kill, try to maim or injure! No killing! Understand?"
"Whoo! That's a plan!" Clarisse whooped, gathering up campers to attack. Well, at least she agreed with it. Piper, who was clutching the beam of the nest, suddenly shouted "Duck!" as an arrow hit above my head. The boat lurched, and Leo momentarily lost control of the boat. I hit the edge of the nest, and flailed for a grab on anything, anything that would keep me from falling. Too late.
A sudden jerk made me fall over, and I was heading for the water before I knew it. I prayed to a god, any god, hoping there wasn't any rocks below the water. I heard my name being called as I contacted water, and only then realized how deep the water was. I couldn't find which way was up, and I panicked. My lungs couldn't hold out for much longer. I jerked and tried to swim, looking for some sign of which way to go. Suddenly, I saw sunshine below me, so I flipped my body and swam toward the sunlight. I broke through the water, gasping for air. I was far ahead of the boat because of the current, only a couple feet from the shore. I swam as fast as I could, hoping I wasn't spotted.
Arrows were flying and zipping overhead, and I realized that my friends were retaliating, firing their own arrows. I climbed to shore, hiding behind one of the pillars, trying to keep my breathing slow. I wanted to smack myself when I remembered my Yankees hat from my mother, and I pulled the said object from my pocket. It somehow survived my fall, meaning it wasn't floating in this damn sea when I took a swim, along with my dagger thank goodness. I slipped the hat on, feeling relief that I was invisible as long as I had this hat on. My shirt was torn at the shoulder, and blood dripped in my eyes. I gently prodded my forehead, my fingers coming back slick with my own blood.
My leg was in pain, and I didn't dare look at it. The sand below my feet was red, and I hoped that a trail wouldn't reveal my cover. I softly touched my thigh, and winced when sea water from my hand seeped into my wound, making it sting. I unsheathed my dagger, and found a doorway to a tower that had been shot at, and limped up the stairs. I wondered which way Jason had went, maybe west or east to find the Reyna girl, and started to cautiously walk up the steps. A torch was lit ever five or ten feet, somewhat dimly lighting the dark stairs. I placed my hand on the walls, and felt something...slimy. Like a gigantic slug had wormed its way across the walls, coating it with the sticky mucus. I had to suppress a scream, whipping the goo on my jean shorts, and continued upwards.
The steps seemed to go on forever as each step I took was painful, yet again my blood covering my vision. I finally made it to the top, and found a fountain gushing water in the corner, a big bow and arrow mechanism perched tightly on the windowsill unguarded, and loaded. I headed to the water, carefully rinsing out my forehead. I didn't have a chance to look at my leg, though. Why? Because someone then stepped into the room.
I jumped, but remember I still had my hat on, and watched a figure step from the darkness. From what little light was coming from the window, I saw his face. His jet black hair was a mess, like people around here frequently messed up his hair,  and his green eyes locked on the spot where I was. I looked down at my feet where he was staring, and cursed at myself when blood and water was pooling at my feet. I slowly looked back up him, praying to Hades that he wouldn't attack.
"I know you're there," he said, Riptide in hand, "Come out," His voice sounded...different. Not the playful voice I heard before. This one sounded stern, and serious. Percy was never serious. Ever. I slowly reached up, and took off the hat. My body shimmered into view, and I shoved it into my back pocket. My dagger was in hand, my other hand trying to stop the flow of blood that was profusely leaking from my hairline.
I knew what Percy was going to do before he did, and I ducked s he lashed out with Riptide, cutting some of my hair that was in my pony tail. Strings of my hair littered the floor as I smashed the butt of my dagger into Percy's chest, knocking the sword out of his hand. I pinned his arms above his head as he slammed into the wall. "Perseus" I said, getting his attention. "How...do you know my name?" he gasped, sucking in quick breaths. Blood was now blocking my right eye, so I could only see the left side of him.
He stared at me while I said my next words, "I know…you because…I'm your friend…girlfriend to be exact." His eyes darted back and forth at my face, his forehead wrinkling as if his head was trying to process what I saw. Blue smoke rose up from the window, and I knew I didn't have much time. "Listen," I started, letting go of his hand to bring my own up to my forehead, pressing on the wound. "My name is Annabeth, Annabeth Chase. We met in the infirmary, when I told you you drooled when you sleep, you eat things that are only colored blue, you have a half-brother named Tyson, and I saved your butt more times then you can count.
"You have a Pegasus named Blackjack, and a Hellhound named Mrs. O'Leary as a pet, Your best friend is a satyr, and-" I started again, but he cut me off my pressing his lips to mine. I melted into him, and his arms wrapped around me. "You remembered!" I whispered as he twirled me around. He nodded, an then looked at me from an arms' length. He pulled me over to the fountain, and I collapsed on the floor. I lost way to much blood, and I felt like I was going to pass out. Ripping off a piece of his purple shirt, he soaked it into the water, and gently dabbed my forehead. I felt the wound close up, and a stinging in my thigh reminded me off my other wound. "My…my leg is hurt too," I said, wincing at the pain. Percy knelt behind me, and carefully pulled my sticky, bloody pant leg up. Because the blood had dried, Percy could only get the jeans up to my knee, so he carefully cut away the fabric. He took the piece of his shirt that he used to clean my forehead to heal my leg, and then wrapped it around the wound, and I felt much better. Still wanted to pass out, but better.
I suddenly remembered Jason and the other campers, and tried to stand up. "Whoa, hey wait a minute." Percy said, tugging me back down. "You need to rest. You lost a lot of blood." I shook my head. "I-I need to go. I'll see you again I promise. Can you just…tell a captain to lay off the boulders and arrows? We're kinda getting pummeled out there." He nodded his head, and supported me on his shoulder. We walked down the steps of the tower in silence. I saw the gold head of Festus shimmering in the crystal sea, and looked to Percy. He saw it too, and tensed. "Don't worry," I cooed, moving a piece of hair out of his face, "We just want to talk." Percy found a large piece of wood, and I sat on top of it. Percy then willed the water to move, and controlled it so that I could get to the boat.
"Annabeth!" Clarisse yelled, momentarily distracting everyone. She caught me as I stumbled, and took me to the infirmary on the ship. As I laid down on a cot, ambrosia being handed to me, Clarisse asked "Did you find him?" I smiled, and said, "You have no idea."
