Description The little mermaid drew back the crimson curtain of the tent, and beheld the fair bride with her head resting on the prince’s breast. She bent down and kissed his fair brow, then looked at the sky on which the rosy dawn grew brighter and brighter; then she glanced at the sharp knife, and again fixed her eyes on the prince, who whispered the name of his bride in his dreams. She was in his thoughts, and the knife trembled in the hand of the little mermaid: then she flung it far away from her into the waves; the water turned red where it fell, and the drops that spurted up looked like blood. She cast one more lingering, half-fainting glance at the prince, and then threw herself from the ship into the sea, and thought her body was dissolving into foam. The sun rose above the waves, and his warm rays fell on the cold foam of the little mermaid

The Little Mermaid is my favourite fairytale ever. It's so moving ;.;
She gives up everything for love: her home, her family, her voice. Its quite a powerful thing. She even challenges the pejudice her people have against humans by joining the land-dwellers.
At the end, she's given the chance to save her own life by killing the prince she loves (to break the contract with the sea witch). But when she sees him so happy with his new bride, she decides that she would rather die and let him live a happy and long life.
I think the reason I love the disney version so much is because she gets a happy ending c:

I drew her at the moment she becomes sea foam. She's facing away from the ship that carries her beloved prince: she doesn't want to see it anymore. Her eyes are filled with tears, but she's smiling.

It is You feel so sorry for her but at the same time she died happy even if she did not get to live her dream or be with the man she loved.

You've really caught that moment.

I like her look... She knows she did the right thing even as she dissolves, and can take that with her... and at least Anderson himself HAD to tack on the final bit about her becoming a daughter of the Air. I found one illustration that showed her as one, still a mermaid, which I liked...

I did look through my collection, but I didn't find that one... It just shows her in outline form, as a mermaid, rising up into the sky, a rather beautiful image. I'm surprised I didn't keep it, I photocopied a lot of images from old books.

It sounds really beautiful ^^
I think just as an outline it would work, as she becomes a spirit

Let me know when you have! In the picture I remember, she was looking toward the ship and the shore where the Prince had gone as she rose up, her body vertical except for her head, and started swimming up into the sky. I loved that.

Lovely. The waves are pretty good. I'm impressed. I like the ship sailing away into the sunset. So sad. But sweet too.
