A high, halting voice drifted through the corridor. Every now and then her husband's low voice would interject, before the young voice would start up again, at first hesitant, but then gaining confidence.

Esmeralda stopped in the doorway and marveled at the sight before her. Three dark heads and one white head were bowed together in utmost concentration. Every now and then the white head would nod gently as the youngest boy pronounced a word properly, a gentle smile evident on his aging face.

The tableau before her was so sweet and domestic, that for a moment Esmeralda thought her heart would simply seize to beat because of the utter perfection. But before she could expire, her eldest son looked up from his homework, and noticing his mother, delightedly greeted her with a happy yelp.

"Mother!"

At this both her husband and Constantine looked at Clement, twin furrows evident between their drawn together brows.

"Honestly, Clement," came Constantine's rebuke, "Can't you even be still for a moment?"

But then he noticed his mother too and the scowl vanished.

"Hello mum."

Solange, tired of being ignored, threw her quill on the table. Then she got up and crossed the floor, embracing her mother.

"Honestly children," Esmeralda grinned, "You'd think I had gone to the end of the world, by the way you seem happy to see me!"

"Well, it's not that, "Solange piped up somewhere near her mother's waist, "But you'll distract daddy, which means we get a break from books!" And with that, she proved herself completely her father's daughter as she bounded past her grinning mother, into the sunny corridor. Her two elder brothers quickly followed, cheering and whooping.

Claude Frollo huffed at his children's antics, but his eyes were focused on their mother, silently glittering over his golden-rimmed reading glasses.

" You cannot help but utterly distract all Frollo's, hmmm?"

Esmeralda just grinned at her husband. In a few steps she reached his side and plopped down in his lap, ignoring his protests. Then she proved to be a distraction to the eldest Frollo as well.
