 Back when they were fighting occupying US or Spanish gov'ts, the Apache people only took from settlers what they needed- i.e. food, horses, certain tools, etc. All Apachean tribes made clear distinctions between raiding (for profit) and war.

Raiding was with small parties on a specific economic target, and war was with large parties (often using clan members) mostly for achieving retribution of some kind.
