I find it difficult to choose Destroy and doom both EDI and the Geth even if it means getting the scene where Shepard takes a breath, so I usually take the middle option of Synthesis to save them and EDI.

Technically speaking, Shepard was "fired" from military after he died before ME2 (and I don't think they ever actually admitted him back). The title of Commander just stuck with him as honorific title (Quarians explain it in ME2)

Late last year I've been planning on a post-ME3 fanfic (50 years later to be exact) focusing on Liara stopping Salarian cyborg terrorists. I have a few ideas if you'd like to hear them here.Β

I chose the destroy ending, too. My head-canon there is that the Quarians were able to rebuild them.

He's a Commander, not a Colonel.
John is a placeholder name, is first name is never said in game because the player decides it upon character creation, he is always referred to as "Commander" or "Shepard".
He's named after Adrian Shepard, not some twat from Stargate.

They use John because its a rather generic name (John Doe). When you play the game, you pick whatever first name you want. John is just a placeholder.
