Amazingly well preserved, given of how many eras that have passed between the dawn of the Roman Empire and our time. Nice angle and nice bright sky, too.
Augustus' reign was a time of widespread monumental building in Rome and its territories. Sources say that Augustus inherited a city of brick andΒ made itΒ a city of marble. Β

The whole city of Pula has retained the "Romanesque" and Mediterranean feel. There are random pieces of Roman architecture scattered throughout the city. There is an incredibly well preserved Roman arena/colosseum type building in the city center as well. They are very laid back about letting people interact with history. You can walk through, touch and climb on Roman ruins. It was completely mind blowing to interact with these buildings in such an intimate matter. This temple in particular was completely restored at one point, but a WWII bombing raid brought down most of the building. It is a testament to the original architects that these structures lasted so long.

Sadly, the temple was almost completely destroyed by an ally bomb during a series of devastating air raids on Pula in 1944. It was reconstructed in 1947.

When visiting, you can see the damage by observing the discrepancies of some of the stones in the walls (especially the west wall) and columns. None the less, a beautiful building. One of the many Roman remains on the east coast of Adriatic.

Countries and rulers change, works of art remain. If we could only be farsighted enough to preserve them, regardless of different ideologies or wars.

It's amazing that it lasted so long. A temple where the emperor was worshiped is very valuable.

It even survived a WWII bombing raid. They don't make buildings like they used to!
