Description Quite an eventful day today, but i shant bore you with the details.
In short, we spent the day near the seaside and visited a butterfly farm on the way home. I enjoyed it, if a my dad and sister didnt. I guess it was because it was already a scortching hot day and then going into a greenhouse, really wasnt the pleasentest of experiences, but i did enjoy photographing the huge amount of butterflies. A lot of the shots were hazy as they had sprinklers running at times which made the air misty. I also got to chat with a fello photographer who was out enjoying himself, which i rarely get the chance to. He had a lot more exspirence than me, being in his 70's and having a strong interest in photography most of his life. Was interesting hearing what equipment he used to use, and that he now currently uses a point and shoot digital, I think he had fun when i let him have a try with my 20D. he said he never made a career of it although he wish he had, something i hope im not saying when im that age, i hope to attempt a career at it, although a lot more skill is needed and improvement.

Well anyway, i like this shot, I like how the depth of field and the background have created these blotches or "sparkles" of light that seem to be eradiating from the butterfly.

I LURVE the format of this shot! The tall and thin crop really emphasises the butterfly. Again colours are very good, if a little dark. Composition is excellent and the butterfly is pinsharp which is excellent. To improve i would used the clone stamp tool to get rid of that distracting orange blotch on the leaf. Other then that i love this shot. the depth of field is fabulous. Great job.

thanks! Yeah that orange bit of the leaf has been bugging me for a while now but havent had the time to go edit it out, but i'll find time soon. I tryed to go for deep dark colours to highlist the butterfly more. Thanks again.

Deep colours are good but if they are too dark then they obscure detail which is the case here. Its only slight so its fine. But just so you are aware for future photographs.

bokeh is iteresting and once more - you compostition pays attention to the leaf more, than to a butterfly.

i didnt catch that first bit. I was aiming to have a lot of emphasis on the leaf as a main part of the shot, so the composition was what i was going for.

Well i can assure you it is not a lead or a melon, but infact a green wrinkly pigs ear... it was a butterfly farm/butchers you see.

Shut up about broadband! i will have it here one day, you mark my words! then i shall control the world!

Absolutely delicious and amazing photo. I'll give it a fav but I really think you should enhance it's sharpness, to bring out the detail. With this resolution, unsharp masking with 0.6 pixel radius, 100 strength and 5 clipping would do wonders!

iamgoatman In reply to Inebriantia [2006-09-10 23:34:21 +0000 UTC]

thanks! and cheers for the fav also.
I took your advice and applied the unsharp mask, worked really well, the detail is far clearler. I normally sharpen my shots but sometimes i simply forget. Now edited, thanks
