Description THE ART

This is a pin-up by *8Red7 for a short comic we are working on together. (I'm the writer, and created the characters and setting, he's doing the line art as you see here.)

If you like this work, please visit his copy and comment/favorite there!

TRYING OUT AS COLORIST

*8Red7 and I will be choosing a colorist for our short comic "The Deathlings: Black Label" right here on DeviantArt.

If you are interested in the role, all you need to do is color this inked pin-up by *8Red7 and send us your finished image. The 10 page short comic will be self-published in my own anthology, "Black Label Comics" and submitted to other anthologies.

The Deathlings: Black Label  © 2010 Ian Struckhoff
Summary - A Deathling, The Nameless Cowboy, breaks into a series of apartments in the City of Fog, looking for something. Once he discovers the right place, he leads a group of refugees there-- and we see that he chose it as a safe place well-stocked with cigars, whiskey, water, and a bit of food. The Man with No Name - (TMWNN in this script) - A Deathling who used to be a cowboy. He's gruff, unshaven, and scarred. He doesn't have a name, but he does have guns.

COLOR NOTES

Style: The preferred style is a semi-flat one, with a flat base color, with flat areas of highlight and lowlight to give definition and depth without a soft feel.

Palette: The preferred color scheme will use a narrow palette, with limited colors. Overall the colors should feel faded, to suit the story and setting. The descriptions below are for what the "Real" colors would be, how you translate that to the image is up to you.

Setting: The story takes place in what appears to be a long-abandoned modern age city, full of a dense thick fog. The story has aspects of noir, westerns, and zombie survival.

The Characters, from rear left to rear right, then front, are...

First Woman: Dark blonde hair, mid-30s. She appears to be a policewoman or security guard from the early 1980s, and her clothing is a uniform. Likely color scheme is navy blue and gold.

Young Man: Dark hair, early 20s. He is a modern day "trendy douchebag". Dark clothes, black and greys with some color.

Second Woman: Dark hair, late 40s. She appears to be a 50s housewife.

Older Man: Balk, with dark but mostly greyed hair and facial hair. He appears to be a medieval peasant, in light colored tonal (brown, tan) clothes. He has a battered, rusty crude shovel.

Girl: Light-haired (strawberry blonde or light blonde) about 6-8 years old. She also appears to be a medieval peasant. Her clothing can be tan/brown/off-white, or a faded formerly bright primary or secondary color (not blue or purple).

Nameless Cowboy: Dark hair, late 30s. One of my most popular characters. He wears dark, faded clothes, with an off-white shirt. His black and brown leather clothing should be made up of a variety of different tones (greys, dull tans, etc.). He wears a dingy off-white shirt. His hat is near-black. His skin is a little pale and grey. He has a scar on his face. He has a rifle with a wooden stock on his back. His pistols are bright silver, almost white-- they should stand out, and not have much in the way of shadows. The bottle is full of bourbon, and the test on its label is white.

If you have any questions about the design, colors, etc. just comment here and we will get back to you.

Well, this has certainly caught my attention. I've been looking for something I can tackle with a flatter shading style and I do love me some subdued colors.

I may have to put aside a project to try my hand at this.

And who could pass up zombies and cowboys?

So glad to hear it. Drop me a note if you have any questions about the project.

so is there a deadline?

We will be picking an artist as soon as we have someone whose work we are happy with. This means there's no set deadline, except that you will want to get done before someone else gets the job.

i hear you i got a couple projects running now but always lookin for more know what i mean?

also am i understanding correctly you are more looking for like a cell shading style rather than a blending style on the coloring?

That's a much better way of describing the color style than my wording. That's exactly it.
