How'd you go about creating this? Like, the details of your process? I need to create a digital self portrait using Illustrator or Photoshop (I prefer Illustrator) before I enter college in the fall, and I have no idea what I'm doing

did you make this from scratch or did you live trace a photo?

I didn't do live trace, I used a reference photo, and manually traced and color picked off the photo, so it's like live trace, only I chose exactly where each shape of color were and what exact color they were.

did you trace over a photograph? i'm just now in a vector graphics class and we just have to draw a picture in illustrator to show our skill level. so just getting some ideas. i'm guessing this was drawn using a photograph for reference and did you alter the photo in photoshop giving the colors the "cutout" effect and then just traced the colors exactly? or did you use the photo as a base and make your own decisions for color planes?

A lot of other students in my class did the cutout approach, but I don't personally like it, as it ends up being very unintuitive and doesn't have the personal touch to it. What i did was take a photograph on my isight camera of my Macbook Pro, getting the lighting somewhat how I wanted it. I then took the photo into photoshop and used some curves and color adjustment tools to give it the right look and color scheme. From there I exported two version of the image. One as-is after the color adjustments, and one with a slight median filter and medium gaussian blur filter. This helped even out the tones of the image and give me better color averages to sample from. Once in illustrator I started tracing color sections of the un-blurred image, and then enable/disabling the blurred one to sample colors into my pallete. After getting most of the rough shapes down it's a lot of finessing of color and shape to make it look the most natural. Hope this helps, maybe I'll put up a tutorial on my website soon!
