Yep... It is a common mistake among cosplayers and models. That metal shackle you place near your wrist (that connects gurd and pummel) was supposed to protect your fingers against horizontal slashes in fencing. That is so called minimum "developed" guard for your hand in fencing. Originally it ment to be placed somewhere between your 2nd and 3rd phalanx of your fingers holding it. This way it will protect your hand.

You are absolutely right. Unfortunatelly without good practice it's easy to forget about this at the fotoshoot
