Odin - Óðinn - Wotan - Wōden - Alföðr - Alfader(a few of his hundreds of names)
He is associated with both wisdom, war, battle, death, and magic (he saw the runes in a vision), poetry, prophecy, victory, etc..
Available as A4 print here: www.etsy.com/listing/29693026/… I have been haunted by the thought of creating a portrait of Odin for years now, and finally yesterday, I fell over a specific photoseries by skiesofchaos who's stock I have been wanting to use for ages now..
So here is the result; Odin in his hall, Preparing to go on another trip to Midgaard - disguised as the mysterious wanderer he is also known as.
But first he must hear the latest news of the world, from 2 of his other ears and eyes - Hugin and Munin!
This was my entry to the 'Nordic Art & Graphic Challenge 2008' at Addictive Hobby

I am looking at different Odin images, but this is one of my favorites. I have written a book which features Odin and his ravens. I am thinking about putting illustrations in the book but they would have to be black and white. I will have a web site, too, and there I could use a color image like this. The book is self published and initially I will have 200 copies printed. I would list each artist by name, of course, and their web site if they have one and want to list it.

The ravens seem particularly interestingly arranged, cool composition, generally very archetypical treatment of the subject -
You see, I used to know that my ancestors worshipped a God named like that, and the whole badass warrior aspect, but it's only relatively recent that I found out... essentially about the bits and pieces that makes one recognize the people from whose minds these legends were born as a more ancient-times-y version of the people I know.
There's a few old fairytales that were kinda plastered over with a christian version in the middle ages, but didn't quite make sense, this one story I really liked that starts with "...when God still walked upon the earth-" but has him discribed as this old man and the setting generally european, and he basically puts a rather greedy random farmer to a test, and I guess when I read more about the old myths, it all made sense. This whole "old guy with a wizard hat who is a keeper of riddles and secrets" archetype remained strogly in the heads of the people until this day, and then I suddenly get this idea of where it comes from... or well, as a fairly archetypical idea, it could have come up several times independently, but this still speaks for the longtime prevalence of it.
It's just all very fascinating and awesome, and I think this guy will always be one of my favorite mythological figures.
