THE FIRST THING I UPLOAD WHEN I COME BACK IS AN APP IM SORRY but we're reopening soon so yeahh!! also i posted this on twitter but my art style has changed a ton since i came back from hiatus i dont know how it happened

In his human form, Ren has a tanner complexion and hair with hues ranging from blue to purple. Bright blue eyes. Has a toned body due to being a swimmer and broader shoulders with a narrower waist/legs. Pudgy nose. Rosy cheeks. Hair clips on one side, two braids fitted with beads on the other. Personal taste.
Though he lacks a half-yokai form, he becomes a smaller, child-like creature that adorns an umbrella as a hat in his yokai form. Amefurikozos aren't very cute -

☲ [ Abilities ]
Ability: Rain Making
Overview: Ren is able to cause precipitation in the form of rain to fall. The largest area that he can cover is within a quarter-mile diameter, but using this ability over such a large area is extremely taxing on his body. The heaviness of the rain is always proportional to the area it covers (larger areas = lighter rain/sprinkles; smaller areas = downpours). Creating rain isn't particularly useful in battle (unless he would want to cause a downpour in one spot, but that would require an immense amount of concentration).

Strengths:
▶ Anyone who can manipulate water or smth can use this as a water source
▶ Can do it without too much concentration due to being an Amefurikozo

Limitations:
▶ Can't be used on extremely hot days
▶ Isn't too useful in direct battle

Ability: Light
Overview: Based on the paper lantern that Amefurikozo normally carry, Ren is able to create a small source of light either in his hands or a short distance away. Similar to the proportionality in his rain making skill, his light functions in the same way. Creating larger lights equate to a lower amount of brightness while smaller, compact spheres of light will be much brighter. 

Strengths:
▶ Can actually create the light a bit of a distance away (up to 5m), providing some sort of distraction if needed LOL
▶ He'll always have a night light B)c

Limitations:
▶ The size of his light cannot exceed a square about a foot in diameter (12" / 30cm), and even then, the light is extremely dim.
▶ When put into use, his light is actually less useful than a flashlight, as flashlights emit beams.

☲ [ Personal . Information ]
       { p e r s o n a l i t y }
Ren's passive nature is predominantly the characteristic of his that triumphs above all else; he rarely raises his voice in protest and normally goes along with whatever else is decided. While this does good in appeasing others and avoiding arguments, it makes him a pushover and easy to take advantage of. Asking him his opinions on most things will simply lead to a shrug and a monotone reply of "I'm okay with whatever." even if he does have a preference. Perhaps the only exception to this is if you're a certain blue-haired Zashiki-Warashi that leads Ren to doom about every other day (translation: if you actually do manage to befriend him, he'll actually have opinions B))

His apathetic demeanor is just that -- a demeanor. Ren is actually both easily flustered and excitable upon speaking to him for more than a few seconds. It can also be deducted that Ren is aperfectionist, often driving himself to monumental heights to achieve success. Terrified of failure, he becomes self-critical, becoming harsh towards his own actions. It's this climb to perfection that has led him to develop a sort of inferiority complex. He feels compelled to stack his own achievements against those of his peers and co-workers, often finding his accomplishments to lack value in comparison.

Though he's generally a loyal friend and a good listener, the fear of being alone and losing friends has led him to be rather clingy around those that he holds dear. He needs constant reassurance, and if anything in a friendship goes wrong, he's quick to blame himself and send out a flurry of apologies. In addition, his cowardly nature holds him back from being a great support. Rather than being the person who quickly rushes to their friend's aid, he'll merely stand back with wide eyes, frozen like a deer in headlights.                       { l i k e s }

{ tl;dr }
Coming from a rich family, Ren and his sister, Ameko, grew up privileged and raised just as humans. The gap between them began when Ren's achievements towered over his sister's, leading to a rigid separation that would lead into their adulthood. They were always there, in the presence of one another -- just not there for each other. He was 8 when he met Hina, who urged him to stand up for himself, and 12 when he met Shota, who continuously pushed him out of his comfort zone. 

After high school, Ren and Shota attended the local university. Shota and Hina had been telling him about a cafe in town - Harmony - that they'd both be working at. What sealed the deal for Ren attending is when Shota said that his sister, Ameko, would be working there too. Ren's main reason for working there is to mend their strained relationship.

The Azuma family was strict, traditional, and rich. Their kids were privileged. They owned a nice house, had their kids go to a nice school, and possessed a high-class kimono store. Nobody would have guessed that the Azuma family was composed solely of yokai -- of rainmaking spirits that decided on the weather of that particular day. Ameko was the first daughter of this family. Like her mother, she was an ame onna -- a rain making female spirit. Ren, an amefurikozou like his father, was born a handful of years after.

Being born as a yokai in a predominantly human society was strange, but considering their family's wealth, nobody would have guessed it. The Azuma children listened to the lore and history of their own kind (in fact, their mother had been a human prior to becoming an ame onna) but were warned to stay away from other yokai in order to blend in with humans instead.

Though Ren and Ameko's parents were very, very good at showcasing their wealth, showing their love for their children was another story. It's not like their parents were bad parents by any means, but their attempts to express their love came and went, seemingly lacking any affection. Ren and Ameko were showered in gifts -- nice clothes, expensive toys, lessons in all areas that Castiglione himself would've been proud of. Their parents wanted their children to be the best that they could and succeed in life, but this outlook was often twisted into a cruel guidebook on what-to-do and what-not-to-do.

From any outsider's perspective, Ren looked to be the favorite child. His marks in school triumphed over his sister's; his musical capability brought his sister's to shame. He was the child his parents could brag about. He was the child his parents pushed their expectations on. However, there wasn't always a clear divide between Ren and Ameko. Back when they were kids, far before their successes and failures could be weighed against each other, they enjoyed a happy childhood in the presence of one another. One of the worst things, in Ren's opinion, was watching his relationship with his sister crumble. He became an obedient son, too scared of failure or of being shunned like his sister that he simply completed every task that his parents pushed on him. Eat more protein and get more muscle? Done. Study hard to become the top of his class? Completed. 

Ren grew up being shaped into the perfect son and child, molded by his mother and father into the young man that they wanted him to be. Ameko was forced to watch from afar, hardly finding any light in the long shadow of Ren's accomplishments. This divide is the one that would continue to force them apart. Worst of all? Ren was glad that it was Ameko. He was glad that he wasn't the one that his family ignored. 

And he hated himself for it.{ o2 }
School generally went smoothly for Ren -- he had a few friends and was near the top of his class. However, whether it was due to his physical physique, intellectual accomplishment, or simply his passive nature, he became a frequent target for some of his school's local bullies. The bullying was always pretty minor and never got physical, but it was enough to become annoying.

On one such day when he was 8 years old, a few of Ren's tormentors decide to follow him down to the river near his house. Ren was used to this behavior - being followed and facing teasing - but what he wasn't used to was being saved. A fox came out of nowhere and scared away the people that had been bullying Ren , and the situation was strange because Ren had never seen foxes near that river. Ren continued to go to the river every day after that and met a girl, Hina, who had the same hair color as the fox's coat of fur. He eventually deducted that she was a Kitsune and yokai like himself. They met up day after day, slowly growing closer. As tradition goes, Ren gave her the promise that one day he would give her kitsune no yomeiri -- sunny rainfall to signal the wedding of a kitsune.* 

This wasn't the first time that Ren had met a yokai outside of his own family, but his father often urged his children to blend in with human society rather than the yokai community. Befriending Hina, in a sense, was Ren's first step in disobeying his father.

Hina and Ren were still friends by the time they entered high school. Ren watched from a distance as his sister became disobedient towards their parents, quick to do the opposite of whatever they said. He couldn't ignore his growing guilt as this shift in personality occurred, more so when he learned that she had joined a gang at their high school. 

This is how he met Shota, a Zashiki-warashi in the same gang who became fond over Ameko (calling her senpai and latching onto the girl). Ren first met him when Shota followed Ameko back to their house. Somehow, someway, Ren was pulled into an elaborate stunt by Shota and found himself befriending another yokai. Strangely enough, the relationships he felt the strongest about (despite his parents warnings) all involved yokai: His parents, Hina, Shota, and Ameko. 

Albeit Ren encountered trouble more often in high school due to Shota's schemes, high school was much more enjoyable than the years prior: He had real friends, excelled in the school's swimming club, and found that he had a passion for learning. Perhaps the only thing missing was his sister. { o3 }
High school, nevertheless the best years of Ren's life, came and went. Ren and Shota decided to attend the same university, Ren to study to become a teacher, and Shota to... who knows--

Ameko, determined to be able to support herself, began to work at a cafe called Harmony. Ren wouldn't have found this out if not for Shota's stalking tendencies. Upon finding this out, Shota immediately applied and attempted to drag Ren into it as well. The selling point was when Shota exclaimed that Ameko would be working there as well. 

...So he applied. Of all the details that Shota could've left out, the one that he didn't say was that Harmony wasn't a normal cafe. Sure, even Ren had heard the name of it before, but what he was ignorant about was the fact that the employees were all yokai just as himself. Hina, too, had mentioned that she would be working at this cafe as well. It was his lack of self-confidence that made Ren so reluctant to apply. But finally, finally, he did. 

Ren's only been working at the cafe for a few weeks. Being surrounded by as many yokai as there are is a bit overwhelming and he's not sure if he'll ever do well with either of his positions, but he is determined to do one thing: Befriend his sister again.☲ [ Additional]

Additional Information:

  • *Ren is an amefurikozo, and Hina is a Kitsune. It's tradition for an Amefurikozo to make it rain on sunny days for a Kitsune.
    • "Rain that falls while the sun is out is known in Japan as kitsune no yomeiri—fox weddings. Kitsune (fox yōkai) hold their weddings during sun showers. Before getting married, kitsune will say a prayer to the amefuri kozō for rain on their wedding day." [x]
  • Not 100% certain of his gender identity, but he is aware that he doesn't feel completely male. Has never really felt the need to put a label on what he believes he is, but saying that he's demiboy is easier than trying to explain his uncertainty. 
  • Has a large collection of umbrellas -- ヾ(_ _*)
  • Wears contacts! Actually has thick, rectangular glasses that he only wears on days that he sleeps in. 
    • Also in terms of alternate appearances: Sometimes pins his bangs up. Changes the beads and hair clips in his hair on a daily basis, so their colors are always different.
    • Has been contemplating getting a haircut. He probably will.
  • Will use the "-san" honorific for 98% of people unless he's 120% certain that he's close, close friends with someone (ie Shota, Hina). Sometimes he asks for confirmation just to make sure that it's alright. He still calls his older sister "Ameko-san" (though a large part of that is simply due to how awkward he feels around her).
  • Plays the trombone
    • Tbh this is solely to accomplish the "When Mom isn't home" meme except it's "When Ameko isn't home" featuring Ren and Shota
  • Has been a swimmer since elementary school, but since entering uni, he decided to focus more on his studies. As such, he only really swims whenever he has time. HE... ONLY SWIMS... FR- backstroke
  • Still in university, so he only works on the weekends (and a few days after school). 
  • Studying to become a teacher, but he's been having doubts --
    • Doesn't plan on staying at Harmony forever. He only plans on working there until he graduates from university.

yes, traditional art is fine! just try to make sure that the image/scan is clean/has decent lighting so we can properly see details and the like.
