the chair in the back, the portrait on the wall, the plant behind the bed and the light from the window. those are way off. that's what gave it away from me. the folds are fine
but it's mostly the light from the window. see if you look at it it's way off and the background behind it is 100% white when i was in 3ds max classes, the teacher told us having something 100% white is a big no, especially for lights since it eats away the details.
now i dunno how similar c4d is to 3ds max but i am guessing you have another source of light there since the window can't light the entire room alone, you'd need some GI, extra FG and toning down the skyportal at the window a bit to get a better hued sunlight
otherwise, really nice design i'd totally buy a room like that

Agree about most points, the portrait was just one of my tries to do a halfway decent human character, didnt work though
Not too sure about the window, it was quite overexposed in the original photo too and i think most cameras wont be able to show the outside world while preserving the details in the darker corners.. atleast without HDR.. but maybe i overdid it a bit, i like glows too much
I never use 100% white lights or materials, but i guess the colors became a bit too cold in post, might change that
Thanks for the critique!

i suppose mental ray gives you extra control than vray in regards to sky portal and such. i never worked with vray myself, so not sure what it can and can't do.
erm adjust the sky portal then don't increase power too much since it's not the main light in the room. (i am still assuming there's a target light on the ceiling)
another option is just to grasp photoshop and edit that ghostly area into correct colors again which is the easier option if you don't feel like waiting for render to finish
trying to get my hands on a poser copy for chars, i am not brilliant with modeling so it's a pain to try and make a char out of scratch

Hm i think it happened in post, the sunlight was a bit warmer in the original render...
Nope, the sun is the main light (with an hdr sky and 2 windows in adjacent rooms), i just used 2 area lights to brighten up some dark spots...
Yes i know that too well, characters arent my strength.. i can get some decent face topology but i dont really have a good eye for facial structure/features i think, so far ive only used makehuman meshes as bases and remodelled them a bit. None of my completely self made ones made it to my gallery yet

erm
it's a technique my teacher taught us for lighting
add daylight outside, if the windows are too small don't push it and just add the sky portals then add lights inside so the lightning would come from them rather than the sun
no color loss that way and no need to turn the sky portal up too much, but then again i work with mr so it might differ with vray
trying to get my hands on either daz studio or poser, but wasn't lucky so far. zbrush is way too professional for me

Beautiful I want a room like that!
At first I thought it was a photo but since you said something is off I looked a bit closer and really the only thing that gives it away (imho) are the folds of the fabrics.
The cover looks a bit stiff, the cushions as well (as if they weren't filled with fluffy stuff) and the curtain-folds.
But other than that - For me (I am not very knowledgeable about 3-D) it is a really cozy room shown in early morning light, illuminated by (at least) 2 light sources.

Hehe agreed, i dont like the fabrics at all, the folds atleast...
For me its a bit hard to tell, I'm too used to seeing 3d pictures, so they rarely look convincing too me.
Thanks!
