Description     My take on the Indoraptor, the hybrid dinosaur that served as the primary antagonist in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Although I wasn't terribly fond of the film itself, I personally liked the Indoraptor. Many in the paleo community disliked the design because it was more monster than dinosaur, yet for those reasons I liked it. As discussed in my Iguanoraptor post, I think a hybrid dinosaur should be disturbing. There were so many bizarre and interesting dinosaurs in the fossil record that if you're going to make one up, it should be unnerving. I feel they could have gone a bit further with making it a monstrous beast, but I still liked it. That said, I didn't want to copy the film's design. I took their concept and built my own monster.

For my Indoraptor, I wanted to combine traits of Tyrannosaurus and large dromaeosaurs (the primary base of the Indoraptor along with cuttlefish, crocodiles, Therizinosaurus, and a laundry list of other stuff depending on which website you're looking on). Also like my Iguanoraptor, I didn't go into this trying to optimize the animal. For example: some of its teeth come from the raptors, some from crocodilians, and some from T. rex, and they aren't situated in the mouth in a way that particularly aids in gripping, tearing, or cutting. It has the heavy build of an adult T. rex despite being around the size of a Utahraptor or small Allosaurus, and might be a bit ponderous. Having robust arms on a tyrannosaur body just makes it front-heavy, forcing it on all fours. This would still be a formidable animal, combining traits from numerous apex predators, but evolution has not refined it to excel in any particular context, so it would surely perish outside of captivity.

    Cheers, folks!

I have to say I prefer your version by far over the movie one! (Though I'll always like that one, I definitely have a preference for realistic designs like here. )

Thanks! I never intended this as a knock on the original design. I quite liked it! I am really pleased with how this guy came out tho.

Cheers!

Ah okay, thanks for making that clear. I do really like this one though, and I do like it a little better, but then again, I am partial to feathered dinos.

Gorgeous Indoraptor, this is so, so much better than the HORRIBLE design maded to JWFK.

Something frightening and definitely not something you'd want to meet face to face, but I like the concept of it being designed for captivity instead of surviving in the wild. It's like a pug, but (kinda) deadly and still able to breath properly.
Makes me think about the effect a design like this would've had in the first JW: something like this but Indominus-sized out in the wild wanting to do predator stuff but not being more capable than a dog (in proportion of course), wreaking havoc in the main park and then just getting killed by the rex. You could even make the viewer attached to it when confronted with scenes where it wants to do stuff (like, kill an Ankylosaurus) but gets hurt. I mean, if you're already anthropomorphizing your raptors...

Very nice though not as good as the original design in my book.
The Indo was a monster that was designed for war. This looks like some abomination found off of a small island.

Fair enough! To each their own. Like I said I rather liked the Indoraptor as it was in the film (I thought traits like the dog-like sniffing and ape-like reaching made it quite unnerving) but I do think they could have gotten a bit crazier with it. Wyatt over at Wyatt-Andrews-Art designed the peak Indoraptor in my humble opinion but I'm pretty pleased with how this guy came out. More monster than dinosaur but imo that's how a hybrid should be.

I agree. Though I would say the Indoraptor's design was done well for the story of the film.
What was it about the film you didn't like?

Most of it can be summarized as it felt like there were a lot of missed opportunities. A lot of plot points that as I was watching I thought were going in a new direction, but ended up being more of the same. The volcano as the threat is consistent with the franchise's lore and it was poetic that the very power source of the park was its undoing (also dinosaurs running from a volcano is quintessential dinosaur so that was cool to see on the big screen), but a friend of mine pointed out that a disease being the threat to the dinosaurs could have had lasting consequences and really raised the stakes. As it stands there's like... a handful of predatory dinosaurs roaming free. If they cause any damage they will be effortlessly hunted down by the most powerful military in the history of Earth and gunned down. If it's a disease, that's a different game. The dinosaurs get to the mainland, and although the team developed a vaccine that could cure the dinosaurs, a new strain came about that could infect humans. Now you have dinosaurs on the mainland BUT you can't really focus on them because you're fighting a disease. Then Jurassic World 3 (set maybe 10 years later or whatever) really is a jurassic world, because civilization has fallen and your few survivors have to deal with the booming dinosaur population. As written it's just a few dinosaurs roaming the west coast and I don't feel the stake are that high.

I thought the Indoraptor and the human clone would be connected in some way. That would have been really interesting (if done right, I suppose it could have gotten real stupid too). Again, if you're gunna make a creepy demented hybrid, go for it! Go all in. Have Maisie (that was her name right?) and the Indoraptor share some connection. Her being a clone ended up having no real impact on the story. Almost any kid would have hit the button because what kid wants to watch dinosaurs die?

There was a lot I did enjoy. Visually it was quite impressive and I like that they employed more animatronics. Having a horror director was a fantastic choice. The supporting cast (vet and techie) got a lot of hate but I actually liked them. Was refreshing to see someone react with terror when a 2-ton Baryonyx is coming at them because guess what? That's how most of us would react. I just feel like overall they played it safe. Was a good move because they made a ton of money, but the first Jurassic Park was so smart and revolutionary. It's unfortunate that the legacy has become (in my opinion) half-hearted cash-grabs that are fun to watch but don't really have much substance.
