UPDATE: CHECK OUT THE WALKTHROUGH:

Had this sitting for a little bit now. Is it sad the best title I could come up with at first was "Lokilicious"? And, fun fact: originally I want to just paint Loki with super long hair. That obviously didn't pan out, as I got caught up in more and more mythology and my brain got in the way of my silliness Instead, the official title is a quote from Marvel!Loki: "I am the monster parents tell their children about at night."

Now, moving right along... I have always been a big big fan of mythology. Particularly Norse and Greek. Loki has always been a favourite of mine (even before Tom Hiddleston became his official incarnation in my mind. Sorry to everyone else that's personified Loki over the years. Tom wins.). So, when I wanted to paint this homage to the third Loki movie, I also thought it'd be neat to include some nods to the myth that inspired the Most Awesome Marvel Character Next To Iron Man. So, with some shady research methods and a large artistic licence, I present this painting to you!

Now, kids, who knows their Norse mythology? ....What? You ALL do?? I call shenanigans! ... Seriously though, if you do...well, good for you! It's cool. Hopefully you'll recognise some things.

For those interested, this Loki-myth-mashup includes:

- the snake, a nod to Loki's child Jormungandr or the snake that dripped poison into his eyes when he was punished for being naughty

- the horse, which is a nod to both Loki disguising himself as a mare and the eight-legged horse, Sleipnir, that was a result of his horsey shenanigans >_>

- the wolf, Fenrir, another one of his kids (sorry, I left out Hel. She just wasn't a fit. Soz.)

- the salmon, and the seal, which are both creatures Loki disguised himself as at one point or another, that crafty little minx!

- if you look very closely, the shape of the snake, the way Loki's cloak is swooshing, and the position of Fenrir, all work together to create the suggestion of infinity (or the figure 8, I guess >_>)

I won't go into heaps more detail about the elements and why I chose to do what I did, but I will say that everything was as deliberate as I could make it, right down to the chaos of the background I was tempted to go nuts and just keep adding heaps more little things, because there was so much I could include, but I decided not to overload it in case I ruined everything -_- I can always do more portraits of him! I absolutely do not claim to be an expert on Norse mythology.

Technical Info

I wanted to try something a bit different with this; combining my love of realism with something a little more abstract and arty. To this end, I need to give the biggest kudos of all to one of my favourite artists of all time, Android Jones. Looking at his stuff was extremely inspirational, particularly when I found out a program he uses called Alchemy. I HIGHLY recommend, it's just all kinds of awesome for making spontaneous artsy stuffs, which is how I achieved a lot of the look.

And thank you to Marvel and Tom Hiddleston for bringing Loki to life - I don't even a tiny bit own this conception of Loki, he's just my absolute fave and I loves him and all is right with the world. Is it weird the part I'm most proud of is his stupid shoulder armour thing?
