The Zaanse Schans in the Netherlands
I live a 20-minute drive from the Zaanse Schans. I love the old mills of which there are also inhabited. It is a typical Dutch picture.
Industrial area
The Zaanstreek was one of the first industrial areas in the world. Hundreds of windmills were responsible for the production of linseed oil, paint, snuff, mustard, paper, but also for the processing of wood. The Zaanstreek has traditionally been particularly attractive to foreign guests; the attraction has nearly 1 million visitors annually. They walk on the Zaanse Schans or view everything from the tour boat that sails every hour in the high season.
It is a neighborhood with historic wooden buildings in the municipality of Zaanstad. It is located on the Zaan, opposite the village of Zaandijk and next to the Juliana Bridge. It is a well-known tourist destination with hundreds of thousands of visitors every year: in 2016 there were 1.8 million, in 2017, 2.2 million. [1] It was set up with the intention of preserving the historical heritage, but it is not a closed open-air museum. The houses are inhabited, so that not only tourists come to the site.
