Reminds me of a tan-pan rabbit, or a rottweiler. A shame I haven't been drawing, seeing these small pictures of yours make me want to pump out some littlies to get me on track. None-to-less, you do shiny coats wonderfully

Quick question, how long do these ones take?

Hey Jacki!!!! Hows it going?
Funny you say it reminds you of a rottweiler, she actually designed this horse character on her dog [link] because she could draw horses better than dogs XD So well spotted
Glad it's making you want to draw, I love seeing your pictures! And haha yeah I love doing shiny coats, I like how it puts more emphasis on the horse's muscles and movement.

How long do these take? It's always difficult to answer this because as hard as I try not to, I always lose track of time XD I'd say it takes maybe around 7-10 hours depending on how detailed the background is. I find I finish artwork quicker these days because of my increased use of watercolours - they cover the page with colour a lot faster than using pencil does!

I wish there were horses of that colour scheme, I think that they'd be really nice. Especially if they had the appearance of warmbloods. Maybe I should do a horse in the colour scheme of my dog (border collie), would just look like a gypsy vanner though :S If I had time.

That's the one thing I really like about paints; its the coverage Still have a massive A2 sized drawing/painting (the kingfisher one if you have seen it), which I occasionally spend a few hours on, but since it's pencils....it's taking a while.

I've started one drawing I want and will get done before Christmas (as it's a present) which is of a tiger for a girl who got into a car accident and is now permanently damaged from the incident. She doesn't know of course, but I'm sure it would brighten up her year a little. Would rather do a painting for a purpose like that than sell it for money. Though I have to say I think i've lost my touch in the art department a little

oh wow that kingfisher one is A2?? No wonder it's taking ages! But I do love doing much bigger pictures like that because of the amount of detail you can fit in. I would like to do a big picture sometime, if I have time!

Aww that present sounds like a lovely idea, poor girl! Doing personal art is always nicer than doing commissions, but it's nice to get a bit of extra christmas shopping money right? Luckily I'm in an arty mood - commissions are so impossible to do with an art block.

Aww i'm sad to hear you've "lost your touch" with art - does that mean you feel out of practice, or that you dont' feel inspired to do art?

I like the big ones as well. I can't seem to do the A4 anymore due to i like to draw a large subject (as you said, to fit more details in), and you can only fit so much animal on A4, nothing worse than a bit of tail, ears, feet, etc cut off the page because there isn't enough room Even worse when you re-draw it on a new piece and no matter how long you spend on perfecting the sketch, it just doesn't compare the the original. I should post up where it is now, it's maybe 1/2 - 1/3 or so done. Water and the blending is what is taking the longest. And yes, pencils....

Oh how I wish I could get some side cash from drawing, just no demand. And with that big rise in the cost of living here apparently has a lot of galleries chewing their nails.

Probably just out of practise. I can still colour as I do, but while I was sketching I just took a lot longer to get a result I remotely liked, such as the tiger's face was too short, then too long, then when I filled in its stripes, it didn't suit the photo at all (couldnt fit much in there, had to leave out a few markings) but at least it passes now I suppose. And its hard to get really into the drawing as well

Another big underwater scene would be awesome to see from you again. That was fantastic

That aside, looking forward to the Hobbit?

"nothing worse than a bit of tail, ears, feet, etc cut off the page because there isn't enough room Even worse when you re-draw it on a new piece and no matter how long you spend on perfecting the sketch, it just doesn't compare the the original" gah i hate that so much! To the point I sometimes resort to tracing the very basic outline just so I can make sure I get it centred to where I want, because I'm so notorious for getting it off-centre or not fitting on the page.

yeah the cost of living in Darwin now is ridiculous - electricity prices going up 30% or 40% in January, urg. Aw I hope the galleries dont' suffer because of it.

big underwater scene, I like that idea, I'll see
I entered that art major (the underwater one) into the Darwin Show this year (under 'painting', in the adult section) and it only got 2nd!!! Usually I'm a modest person, but I swear mine was better than the first place one :/ :/ The judging always seems so unpredictable and random.

Yes i'm looking forward to the Hobbit! In fact, I'm going to NZ in a couple of days (have relatives there, having Christmas with them) and I'm gonna go visit Hobbitin now it's all done-up and pretty for the movies

LyrebirdJacki In reply to In-The-Distance [2012-12-17 06:38:24 +0000 UTC]

And still the traced version never compares...oh well. I bet that's where the artworks that intentionally break out of the page came from; as an excuse to get out of fitting everything in (or redrawing it).

Not to mention rent. People cant really afford luxuries. I remember reading that the elderly arn't looking forward to cutting back on air conditioning because it was hard with the pension now, but there is no way they can afford it when it rises. They will probably get a cut though due to being pensioners anyway. Very unfair on us young people trying to move out!

Oh dont get me started on the judging on this year's show! It's like as if they blind-folded the judges and spun them around to get dizzy and walked with their arms out. First artwork they touch WINS! There was soooo much crap there (some was nice) but I do remember a yellow canvas with a zebra sprayed onto it by stencils and that came first in one category. I think I only got a 3rd and a 2nd, didn't even place for the rest. And I would have to say that was my BEST art in there, yet I cleaned them out the year before with my earlier stuff? If I do enter next year, I wont even go to see my stuff, just when I have to pick them up on the Sunday so I dont feel worse knowing what I lost against. We need art events like the waterfowl duck stamp (America does this yearly), where your art becomes a stamp for 4-5 years or so. And a cut on all the sales of that stamp....much more fulfilling, plus you'd be competing Australia wide.

My brother is taking me to NZ next year (unless we get delayed) due to a game conference he went to in Brisbane where he did a speech. He met a couple of kiwi's that very much inspired him. Something about approaching a NZ game company with his ideas and concept art, and he wants me there because I do alot of his art They were very interested in his work. Hopefully between Jan-March **fingers crossed**
I want to see the Dragon's Den, that pub from the first lord or the rings movie. I bet there will be alot of tourism about now there. Hope you have a good time. May get art inspired?

Yeah I know, house and rent prices are already ridiculously expensive. I was planning to save up for a deposit so after a year or 2 of working fulltime, I'd move out from my parent's house and buy my own place. But now there's no way that's happening, I think I'll just be renting instead.

Yeah the judging was terrible huh! I'd forgotten about yours, but now I remember being surprised at ones that hadn't won what they deserved. I don't think I could do what you did and only look at the art when you pick it up - i like looking at the other art works too much, even if it is depressing to see who beat you. Sometimes you can see they deserved it I guess. I also am just too impatient to wait haha.
That Waterfowl duck stamp thing sounds fantastic!!! I wish we had that!!!!

Oh what's the game conference? What ideas and concept art does he have?? Does have DA, I'd love to see what he's come up with. I didnt' know you had other artists in your family.

And thanks. I plan to do some art while I'm in nz, even if it's just sketching some horses from life for practise. Wish I could start on a big picture, but taking anything bigger than A3 to and fro nz would be impractical haha.

You going anywhere these holidays? And where are you working these days, did you manage to find a job? I can't remember sorry XD

A lot of people on that first home buyers plan had that scrapped which included a few friends of mine who were on it. Back to renting.

Seeing all the other work is half the excitement and thrill of competition I suppose, but when its ridiculous it kind of kills the mood and drive to try again. I'm entering the Sydney Easter Show this year with some paintings of mine to see how I go on a larger scale. I think that would be more exciting but they don't exhibit every painting entered so it would be very disappointing if I didn't even get displayed. Would be way more upsetting than not placing in my opinion. Hoping to get this one painting done (it's A2 and in pencilsXgouache, majority pencils) before the entry cut-off date on the 16th of Jan. If not I wont enter it even though I have until March.

I haven't asked my brother what it was about, but he had to make a speech (which he arsed on the spot which lost a number of people in the audience). He has a site where he puts up all his concepts, has a few "playable" games, most from sprites he uses from other games such as pokemon and he did a few simulations with the digimon keyrings as one of them. Generally its apps or icons that help with aspects in certain games that he wished were made for him when he played them. He did a "EV trainer guide" which was for the newer pokemon games if you understand the concept of EV training. It required lots of counting. [link] It's not his new website, but it includes a few things that he made. He's not much of an artist himself.

NZ going well so far by the way? Managed any drawings?

No holidays for me, conserving money since I quit my job at Woolies. Had a workplace injury which had me treated bad at work (people did not take well to lifting heavy stuff for me yet my employer refused to cut back my hours so I was 40 hrs and constantly aggravating my injury), plus I had to pay for the first number of doctor appointments myself and never could claim that back off work, so $500+ of my own money went down the drain. Main reason I can't draw much anymore, my left wrist was damaged badly and still hurts from way back in April. Hoping to get any job right now really.

Wow the sydney show? Does that mean you'll post down your paintings? that's interesting (and unfair) that they don't display all the entries, I think that's quite a shame. I"m sure yours would make it though. Interesting to see how you place.

I managed a couple of small A5 paintings while in NZ, one of which was a commission and the other was a present for my 13 year old cousin, who loves horses. NZ was great thanks ^^

Wow that really sucks about woolies, that's really bad of them not to pay for your doctor appointments and stuff. Have you been looking at jobs in the newspaper? There are a lot of jobs available in Darwin compared to most other capital cities, so you'll surely find something better than Woolies.

Yeah I'll be posting them at the end of Feb hopefully. I'm entering 2-3.

Loving horses runs in the genes I see; or it's just a girl thing We all have a horse stage sometime, just stays with some longer or permanently.

I'm trying out Bunnings for the 100th time (exaggeration of course, but I always apply there when jobless or looking for better work within a crappy job) but I've applied for just about every bar and pub with a backpacker ending up with the job in the end. I've picked up a few commissions though, and I'm selling quite a number of poultry (I breed quails, chickens and used to do ducks) which pays for petrol I spose. Plus I had heaps saved from Woolies so it's no emergency really; just reeeeally boring.

lol yeah my aunty (my cousin's mum) loves horses too so yeah it could be genetic. Though my mum doesn't really like them XD It's funny, when I was little and I loved horses and used to ask mum if we could own one and stuff, mum said "all little girls like horses; you'll grow out of it." Guess that never happened. Though I actually don't wish to ever own a horse - they're quite expensive and a lot of hard work to keep! I'd rather draw them and go for the occassional trail ride

Oh wow, you're bored? Are you just gonna work again this year? No TAFE or uni or something? Maybe you could look into doing some night classes for fun. At least you get plenty of time to draw (presuming you're not in an art block).

Glad you like it!
