Description A quick shot of my new jerkin. It's all bunched up cause I had been messing with the buttons. (Which are amazing thistle buttons!!!) So it got pulled up, and I didn't realize it. I'll put up a better pic later.

Well, thank you! It's better in real life, I promise. It really is kinda discombobulated in the picture from where I've been fussing with it all evening.

I don't mind the teasing. I'm used to it, everyone in my group teases me a lot.

Finally got to show it to my don. He was jealous. HA! I win! It's completely reversible, too. Except for the buttons. Which are these awesome pewter thistles, I thought they were appropriate for the piece. I got lucky finding them.

lol it's ok. it looks fine really. i understand the fussing thing. i was ALWAYS doing that with my first doublet too. completely reversable eh? i like that idea. i'll have to try doing it sometime. more looks with less garb. clever. might be hard for propor tudor though.

Yeah, I don't know what the deal was that night, normally, I don't touch it, and it lays smooth no problem. But w/e...

It does require more handsewing, so it takes longer. but it takes up less space. Also looks more finished.

i don't own a sewing machine so i do it all by hand anyway.

That's amazing. I made my first gown my hand. After 80+ eyeletts, I went out and bought a sewing machine. I can't do that for my stuff. I'd get sick of it before it was finished. I admire you for your patience, and all the work that must have gone into making your garb, my god, I can't imagine!

yup, it is a pain in the ass and it takes me forever to do anything because i hate sewing. im working on some tudor shorts with pleating to make them puffy and a sexond colour fabric sewn between the depression in the box pleats. dear god i've been working on them since like.... september.

No kidding. That's some pretty hard core stuff, I think I'd go crazy. On the bright side, you'll rule A&S. Especially with hand-sewn late period. That kicks ass.

What sort of fabric are you using?

haha god no. i don't rule anything especially not A&S. medeocre at best. denim and cordoroy my friend. it all has to meet the armor inspections too. lol.

have you tried linen? it passes the armor regulations here. actually, below the waist, it doesn't have to pass the punch test, it just has to be tear resistant. which is just about anything.

linen is out of my budget right now. this is stuff that i picked up six meters for 15$

I understand how that is. I know it's not as cheap, but if you ever get to a point where you can splurge on fabric, fabric-store.com has fencing weight linen between $6 and $7 per yard and it's 59 inches wide. that's about 150cm. and a yard is a little shorter than a meter.

Anyway, that may still be too expensive, I'm starting school again so I'm crazy broke, so I know what that's like. But, I haven't been able to find anything cheaper in linen. we use 7.1 oz linen doubled up, though 6.3 doubled is passing, just because they sell 7.1 in more colors.

Posting my French dress sketch to scraps today, btw! I'm super excited, I got my don's wife to help me figure out exactly how I was gonna do it, but it's gonna turn out awesome. (and pink, which is weird cause I've never worn all pink in my life.)

lol i'm sorry i never replied to this... it got lost in the shuffle of my comments and such. thanks for the tips on linnen and where to buy. i'll definitly check that out now that i'm working again and have a steady flow of income.
i just bought this shirt [link] and i'm totally stoked to get it. sadly it won't be here in time for 12th night in montenguard this weekend but at least it will be here for febuary investiture. this year is going to be way more involved for me in the society.
good luck with school, hope everything is going well for you. i think i looked at your french dress sketch but i don't remember. i'll have to go take a look again. why pink?

It's cool. I'll miss a message everyonce in a while, too. Huzzah income! The shirt is awesome, and I'd be totally excited, too. Our 12th Night was supposed to be the yesterday, but it got canceled cause the parking lot got turned into a skating rink. (darn my sad, unprepared southern town) We got more snow this winter than we've had in forever.

Everything's going great. My first class this school year is a costuming class, then German. I've been dying to start. But, Tuesday my wait will be over, and then I'll probably be cursing my lack of free time.

Well, the dress will be pink because I have two very pink, very shiny fabrics that I got at the fabric sale I told you about, and, miracle of miracles, they match. But the shades they are are kinda funny, and it's unlikely I'll ever be able to find anything else that will match them. My Don's wife went through both our full fabric collections, and neither of us have anything else that goes with them.

And so they must go together, which leaves me with the single most girly piece of clothing I will ever own. Originally it was gonna be a german ren, but I kept changing it till it turned into French late period. Go figure. I'll have to post swatches. And a picture of the fabric room.

(forgot to mention; I got engaged over christmas)

lol yea i heard about that, it was all over the news. sorry to hear that your 12th night got canceled. that kind of thing happens up here and you usually get something of a rendition of SCA on ice. lol. we don't stop just because it's cold or because it's icy.
so how are you liking that costuming class? learning anything you didn't know before? i'd love to see some scans of your sketchbook. german is a fun language to learn. is it high german or low german?

well then, i guess that works out alright. at least those two go together well. that's a plus. one of the many benefits to not buying fabric that isn't in my heraldic colours. i never have to worry about things like that. i'd love to see the pictures. girly isn't a bad thing. it makes all the fighters want to use you as their inspiration.

oh yea that's just a small little detail lol. congratulations. when's the big day? thought about what kind of wedding you're going to have?

The costuming class is awesome! We're learning how to use a serger, and all sorts of fun finishing techniques. Sadly, it's not till the second class that I get to make period clothing. BUT my final project is a walking suit c.1898 so... Useful for steampunk-type stuffs. I'll upload the sketches for the play I'm doing the wardrobe plot for.
OH! AND THE TEACHER WILL HELP ME MAKE AN ACCURATE CORSET!!!!! I'm so excited. I got one for Christmas, but it was made for a dress form, so it doesn't work.

German is pretty easy so far, actually. Though part of that is there are at least 5 people who lived in Germany for 10+ years and are very helpful when it comes to tutoring. I'm pretty sure it's low German. I wish it were high German. I don't think a sad community college could find anyone that knows it, though.

Thank ya! I gotta wait till I graduate. So I can afford the wedding

HO-LY CRAP! sorry. this got burried in the stacks. so im gonna reply before it goes on longer lol.
im gonna have to take a browse through your gallery again and check out these sketches and stuff. im totally going to school soon for fashion design. lol maybe some day we should compare notes. sounds really exciting to be doing the wardrobe plot for a play. i gotta see pictures of it sooner or later.
soon as your done that corset you gotta tell me what you learned so i can make one.
i never actually understood what the difference between low german and high german is.
tell me how the wedding and engagement news goes. big plans? gonna have an sca wedding?

lolz! It's fine. I forget to get on here a lot myself. OMG fashion design! I want to go to Europe to get my doctorate in renaissance/midieval textiles. I believe it's Oxford that does that, actually. Corset's finished. I ended up just doing Victorian undergarments, though. Cause I can't have the overstuffs w/o doing the understuff first. I just don't see it fitting right. :/

This semester is a full Tudor outfit, though. Hopefully.

BTW, realmofvenus.com has some beautiful stuff if you ever do anything late period italian. Also, some really good construction notes just for general use. I think you'll like it, even though I know you don't do Italian.

I never figured out the difference between high and low german, either. Pronunciation, I think.

The wedding.... Will take far longer to get to than I can be happy with, but I'd rather it be that way, and we both be making actual money instead of the minimum wage crap we have going on right now.
DEFINITELY an SCA wedding. I WILL HAVE A WEDDING TO MAKE ANY LAUREL JEALOUS!!!!! Seriously. I've already started researching.
I need to post the sketches from costuming.... all I put up was the one for my corset...

well actually my persona was at sea durring the end of King Henry 8th's reign so late period italian i could plausably do. you gotta share your tudor notes with me.
i dunno, i guess i'll have to ask my granfather. he was in germany before the war, he'd know.
nice, totally understand what you mean about the wedding. i want photos and and and and lol. .....unless i can make it down there for the wedding. lol. you're not that far from me and depending how long it takes you and when i get my passport etc it might be possable for me to come see your big day.

But of course!
You should let me know what your grandfather says.
Of course there will be TONS of pictures!!!! Fortunately, my Shire is full of very artistic people. A bit short on fighters, but artists, I've got. Which means I get invitations and a photographer built in!
YOU MUST COME!!!!! > It'll be a while before the wedding, but still!
