Another entry for ~vbabe1 's Sailor Moon Redesign Contest [link] . Queen Serenity, Luna, and Artemis this time. Not NEO Queen Serenity, not Princess Serenity. Queen Serenity. Someone requested her, and since I'm quite fond of her, I decided to redesign her.

Notes On The Series:

I've always thought that Sailor Moon, particularly the anime, suffered from a bit of schizophrenia. It goes from cringe-inducing Japanese prat humor (at least, it induces cringes in me - I don't get Japanese prat humor) and high school drama to death, suicide, death, murder, and death, with a side order of death. There are two problems with this, in my opinion: first, that's too big a swing, and second, you can't get too serious with those outfits they wear. You just can't. They've got giant bows and sailor collars, for Christ's sake. There are two ways to tackle this - either you take out everything sailor related, amp up the death and destruction, and basically go all Shamanic Princess on the series' ass, or you amp up the funny and high school drama, throw in some more cheek, wit, and couture, and basically go all Clueless on the series' ass. I decided to go with the second route, because it just seems to fit a lot better. So keeping that in mind, and also keeping in mind my love for all things gothic and Victorian, I decided to redesign the senshi to fit what the series might look like with a more Clueless-esque plot and Tim Burton-esque visuals.

Notes On This Design:

First off, I had far too much fun with the hair. Seriously. And I'm extremely happy with the result. I wanted to distinguish her from her daughter, so what I did was wrap her pigtails around her odangos and make the whole shebang like, five feet longer. I also changed the dress to make her match Princess Serenity a bit better. Princess Serenity wears an Empire style dress, reminiscent of the sort of things that Napoleon's wife, the Empress Josephine wore. So I altered the cut of her original dress to turn it into something regnecy-ish. It doesn't have a cape, the dress is just gathered to make it look a bit as though it does (I thought that this was, on the whole, more regal than the wings). It should also be noted, in case it can't be inferred (and I do hope that it kind of can) that from the front, the dress appears to be the same figure hugging, fishtail affair that it is in the anime (and I think in the manga too). I added moonstones pretty much everywhere, too, and even made her eyes moonstone colours and left the moon on her forehead white because in the manga, Chibiusa's moon is pink. I figure that Naoko may have been working with the various different colours of the moon - white, golden, pink (yes, it does happen - google that shit), red, and possibly Kousagi's would be blue. I decided to run with that. I think it's kind of a neat idea. Finally, as for Luna and Artemis, I made them a bit more fluffy to make them look pedigree (they are royal cats after all) and based them just a little on Mr. O'Malley and Duchess from The Aristocats, because I love them.
