Description We suspect this chick is male -- a surprise rooster -- since its comb & waddle are developing so quickly. Eventually, all the white on its head will become black.

I love this chicken picture! However, some chicks will get larger combs but still be female. If it starts crowing in few weeks or so then it might be male.

Either way, I have my fingers crossed.
New roosters tend to disturb the peace of the flock.

Yeah, I have a chick that I think is a roo. Hopefully it's a hen, or else he's going in the cooking pot. Our city limits don't allow roos.

While roosters are allowed here, we've decided not to tolerate a rooster that will attack us. We've had two bad experiences already.
Those two were given away.

Do you have a photo of your chick?

It's hard to tell when they are little, but more often than not, they grow into roosters.

In all likelihood, if they turn out to be roosters, we'll sell or give them away. Especially if they're aggressive.

For now the flock is peaceful.

Our flock was pretty big before we moved. Where we used to live there was plenty of room for roosters to roam. One came from the hills out of nowhere. He was a Silver Laced Wyandotte and we named him "Mysterious Rooster" because we didn't know where he came from. We honestly didn't need to cull roosters because of the land we had. And the plenty of hens there too.

I assume he was a feral rooster?

I guess, he may have just slipped away from someone else's flock or they let him go in the hills. He wasn't all that mean though. Just acted like a normal rooster would.

I'm still getting the hang of the close-up shooting, but I am mostly pleased with how it's going.

Thank you.

Well, our love and care hasn't given us a very good track record with roosters yet! lol Of the three roosters we've ended up with so far, only one of them has been nice. I'm hoping the mean ones were just flukes and we'll do better this time. I did a lot of research and we seem to have been doing everything right--just been unlucky I guess.
