Description Destination Moon

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to one of my top-three favourite Tintin books.

In addition to just being a goddamn excellent start to the Moon Adventure two-parter, this particular album is very near and dear to my heart, as it is the one that my brother and I have referenced, quoted and loved more than the rest for as long as I can remember. Yeah, I know, kinda sappy, bro. But there it is.

I don't know if I can even go into every single detail of why I find Destination Moon so brilliant and keep it as brief as the rest of the little reviews I've written so far-- I'd likely end up going scene by scene, page by page, recounting every hysterical exchange of dialogue, every example of perfect slapstick comedy, every lovely bit of scientific technobabble (which is much less babble than one might assume...in fact, HergΓ©'s meticulous research REALLY pays off here, and feeds the inner sci-fi lover that lurks within me), every part that I associate with a various inside joke with my brother, and...see, this list of what I would LIST is getting tedious. I'll try to sum up.

The tone is fantastic. I love the balance between some of the best humour the series has seen thus far and the ominous, tense undercurrents of the espionage plot. There is extremely little action in this story, but as I've stated before, I'm partial to that flavour of Tintin book. The Thom(p)sons provide --IMHO-- their best performance in the series between the two moon books, with one of the highlights in this album being the "skeleton incident". Captain Haddock is more stubbornly passionate than ever, ripping apart chairs with his bare hands when Tintin comes to harm and going to extreme (RIDICULOUS) lengths to restore the Professor's memory. Frank Wolff has more to do in part two of this story, while my brother and I have always had a peculiar obsession with the character of Mr. Baxter (to the point where I recently calculated how much of his "screen time" is spent answering/using/referring to a telephone).

And, of course, Professor Calculus acts the goat.
...It is my favourite scene in the entire series. Are there even words? I mean...of all the things for Calculus to explode over...and the phrase itself is hilarious-sounding...the fact that his horrible fury doesn't abate much throughout the scene...priceless dialogue...the brilliant reveal of the rocket...how poor Haddock reacts during the entire incident...I absolutely love this scene. NATURALLY I drew one of its best moments: tiny Calculus manhandles the massive Chief of Security ("Well, Professor, what's all this about? I hear someone's acting the goat.") and hangs him on a coat hook.

There's MUCH more I could ramble on about, but this is starting to get long already, and I really need to eat dinner. So, suffice it to say, LOVE IT.

I didn't even talk about, for lack of a better term, the radio show I used to do with my stuffed animals...where one of the stories was a blatant rip-off of the Moon Adventures. Yeah.

That episode just proves that the wrath of a short-tempered man cannot compare to the wrath of a even-tempered man who has finally been pushed too far.

I wouldn't be all that afraid of the captains rants, except maybe when he's been liquored-up.

But I've seen those rare instances where Tintin has finally had enough! So I'd be more afraid of Tintin or Calculus than the Captain.

Because the day Tintin is finally pissed-off is the day you KNOW you're in TROUBLE!

Okay, parts of this story was cracking me up. Thompson and Thomson were screaming like little girls when the mice in Haddock's were scattering around and they jumped on the chair and hugged each other. Even the X-rays!

Especially when Tintin and the crew were floating when the gravity was shut off!

Even Snowy chasing the mice and gets caught between Haddock's legs of the space suit, "Hey!"

What does 'acting the goat' mean?

Ohhh, that just might be my favorite moment in the whole series of books... Hilarious, and I'm a sucker for rockets. A space cadet, you might say...

Calculus acting the goat will forever be my favourite Tintin moments. I do believe it is the first sequence in any comic book that actually had me laughing out loud and I SWEAR TEARS WERE RUNNING

Of all the Tintin I've read (and maybe because I read these two the recently), I remember the scenes when the rocket was taking off.

Oh my god
The Tintin moon adventures were my childhood

They had this and a couple other Tintin books back at my elementary school, and I'd check them out as often as I could because I couldn't get enough of them. X3
