I found it really easy though... Did u actually copy and paste? (O__O) Coz u could just duplicate the layer so than the new object would stay exactly where the original was. Then u won't have so much trouble with arranging the object (^__^) Otherwise if the shape ur doing isn't so complicated, try the gradient tool too (^__^)

well what i do is create a path and fill it on 3 or 4 layers with diff colours and then slightly nudge them, so a very similar approach to yours.
have you seen any of my work at all? i go way over the top with gradients, ha ha i love em.
