the shading I am seeing looks good, I am just wishing the bg was just not plain white...perhaps a slight tone would help.

I love the smile ^^ You could have done a little more shading though, he's lacking depth, more contrast should help. Random fact of the day: I hate eyebrows on horses (and donkeys). The ears seem a bit short for donkey ears, but I can't remember that clearly how he looked on the animation. Anyway, the expressiveness is really neat.
