Description This is the initial sketch for a new painting that I am going to be working on over the next couple of days.

I am producing a range of different dragons, the first on of which was the Ice Dragon that is featured in my gallery. The subject for this illustration is a small forest dragon that lives in Oak trees. The design of the dragon features various oak related images so that it will blend in with it's habitat.

I am going to be painting this with acrylics. I expect there will be a lot of green and brown! I will post the finished art in my main gallery when it is completed.

I've never had anyone request to colour one of my sketches before. Why would you want to do this? and what would you use the finished result for?

If you don't know what you will be using the finished art for am afraid I will have to say no. I earn my living by producing artworks as commissions for companies and it is important that the copyright for the artwork is either issued to them or retained by me. I am afraid if you coloured my sketch and then wanted to do something commercial with it this would break any license agreements I make.

I hope you can draw a dragon of your own to colour. I am sure you would enjoy this more than colouring mine anyway

Although a sketch can seem like an unnessecary stage I think it is very helpful and makes you think out what you are going to do before starting on the painting. It is always important to have plan, where it come off or not is another matter! Having the right tools is important and I'd recomend investing in a small brush, or do your picture a lot bigger than you need it then shrink it down when you scan it in and print it out and it'll look more detailed.

Such wonderful composition -- The oak really grabs me I can't wait to see how this will look in colour. When you work on acrylics, how big is your canvas, for say, something like this one?

Thanks I am painting this at approximately 13x11 inches. This sort of size isn't to massive and so cuts down on time spent just covering the area with paint, but allows for small details to be added without going crazy with a tiny brush.

That's awesome, i really like the idea of a camouflaged forest dragon, and the frill/crest on its back looks wicked.

Thanks. I am glad you like the frill. the idea is that this will look a bit like the oak leaves.
