A couple more practices with cantering without reins and Arctic seemed to have gotten the idea, so next it was on to see if the stallion could actually put up with having a his rider brandishing a weapon.

Simon tried the next day, going out to the same area they'd been using for running practice since there were a few lonely trees that would be great for some target practice. The first few shots he took from the ground, just allowing the stallion to eat next to him, trying to gauge his reactions to the noise the bow made, but like most horses, there was no way he was paying attention to anything while he was eating. So, Si took this as a good sign and decided to hop on. Arctic lifted his head then, but only for a second before it was back down munching at the grass again.

With a roll of his eyes, Simon set his bow up again, aiming his arrow at the tree, steading himself for a second before letting go. The unmistakable 'thwack' sounded across the clearing and the beast's head was soon up. But he didn't shy or jump or even flinch, he just stared for a moment, studying the arrow now stuck in the tree, ears pricked forward in interest. Simon readied the bow again, and this time the stallion's head stayed up, watching as the next arrow was shot and a gust of wind managed to carry it stray from it's target.

"Oh shut up," the scot grumbled as Arctic snorted at him, throwing him a 'you're just useless, aren't you' kind of look.
