Description 'The spouse of Aulë is Yavanna, the Giver of Fruits. She is the lover of all things that grow in the earth, and all their countless forms she holds in her mind, from the trees like towers in forests long ago to the moss upon stones or the small and secret things in the mould. In reverence Yavanna is next to Varda among the Queens of the Valar.'
-J.R.R. Tolkien, The Valaquenta, The Silmarillion

Used a photo of my sister-in-law as reference. The cat is modeled after one of her own, named Rapunzel (after the DMB song, and also because Rapunzel is just an awesome name for a cat. )

EDIT 3.21.06 >> I've decided to completely redo the grass.....this will be updated ~someday~....

This is so beautiful! The color of the hair is fantastic, I have always wanted hair like that. I don't see that color very often, and you did it beautifully! And lovely job on the skin tone...adding to faves

Thank you so very much!
The girl I used for photo reference actually has light brown hair.... I just tweaked it because I wanted Yavanna's hair to be all autumnal and everything. hehehe

Very beautiful and earthy. She looks very warm, but has a subtle knowing look which says you shouldn't underestimate her. Her long hair is beautiful, you did a good job on capturing the softness.

Thank you very much! I chose this particular picture of my sister-in-law because of that expression on her face... that glint in her eyes. And you described exactly why I chose it: because the look is very knowing.

Thanks! It was a really long work in progress, but I finally finished it. The hair was a lot of fun.

The hair just draws me in to the picture, I love it. The hair is really great, but even more, I like the way the face was done and how it all flows really well.

Thanks!!
I was wary of drawing her in red since Tolkien actually described her as being clothed in green. But I figure she might change with the seasons.

Thanks very much! I've always wanted to do a Yavanna portrait where she had leaves and stuff "growing" from her hair.
And I chose my sister-in-law as the reference because a) she has gobs of hair and b) she loves nature and animals and is studying zoology right now.

Indeed!
It came together quite nicely.....but it did take a looooong time to finish. I put it off for a while....and then I broke my pinky and couldn't draw. But now it's all better and I can finish about 3 or 4 other drawings.

Oh, I'll post them. I'm going to try to set myself the goal of finishing at least one before my husband and I leave for our vacation in 6 days.
