I'm a cook and I always loved working with Romanesco...not for its taste
Only because the Fractal geometry of nature by Benoรฎt Mandelbrot fascinated me

cauliflower are really fun to take pictures of. love the fractal aspect of them.

wow... that's really a cauliflower? amazing! i love how you can find such mathematical things in nature

A very beautiful example of fractal patterns in the nature.
I love it! (:

now there's a natural fractal right there. these things are just fascinating. ever tried to take a photo of a snowflake?

i love these fractals ;
it almost looks like a negative
compsotion is great (and i know it's hard to shoot, i've tried already!)

islandtime In reply to Megglles [2008-01-17 06:29:36 +0000 UTC]

if I clearly understood what a fractal was then I might agree but have never really understood them!!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Megglles In reply to islandtime [2008-01-17 08:11:51 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, how to explain... basically a fractal is a mathmatical formula that makes recurring patterns... these patterns seem to appear in nature a lot.. try this link [link] I have a neat little fractal program if you're interested?

islandtime In reply to Megglles [2008-01-30 06:37:23 +0000 UTC]

thank you very much for this - had a look at the link and it helped me understand what you were talking about - brilliant - always wanted to know what they were!!!

After seeing this I almost immediately told my lady friend that we needed to buy some cauliflower the next time we went to the store. Don't be surprised if you see an image of it sometime down the road in my gallery!

Brilliant execution. It is very other-worldly...I never would have guessed what it was. I imagine the aperture was f/16-f/22 given the magnification and great DOF.

Very well done!

-Ryan

islandtime In reply to circumbendibus [2007-07-20 22:09:31 +0000 UTC]

thank you Ryan. Unfortunately I can't remember the aperture. It wasn't your average cauliflower if you're buying some by the way. If you check the comments I think someone named the type it is but it certainly wasn't one I was aware of before. Good luck - you should get a great shot of it

circumbendibus In reply to islandtime [2007-07-20 22:33:46 +0000 UTC]

I realized that today when looking at some cauliflower from our freezer...not even close to the same! That's ok...I like challenges. One day I will find this mysterious cauliflower.

Seeing that shot prompted me to break out my extension tubes and go beyond 1:1 today (actually just beyond 2:1), so thank you for that!
