Tbh the first thing that pops into my head when I think of those old-school design trends is the art style used in Jay Ward cartoons like Rocky and Bullwinkle or Underdog. The exaggerated expressions and proportions of the features were really reflective of the characters' personalities, and I think the same could be said with your work!
