Description
Watakame is the first human and ancestor of all humans in the traditional cosmology of the Wixaritari (plural of Wixárika, also known by the exonym "Huichol") people from Mexico.
In this story, during the first era of the world, Watakame and his dog were a hard working duo, who were informed by the life-giving goddess Tikusi Nakawe about a flood.
They escaped from the flood with a boat made from trees cut down by Watakame. Later, with seeds given by the goddess, Watakame planted what would become the first humans.
A.k.a "Timuwaxi", Watakame, in the time of his death, had his body parts dispersed, and from them, new plants were created. He became a "Kakaiyari" (tutelary deity, usually associated with mountains). The Wixaritari people consider five places to be sacred and connected to the creation of the world. One of them, Wirikuta, is a semi-desert region near the Real Sierra de Catorce, in Mexico, and is traditionally considered to be the point from where the rest of the world was created. Every October, groups of Wixaritari people go on a pilgrimage to Wirikuta.
