Love all your photos... it's breathtaking! Contemplating in buying the Tokina 11-16mm. Do you recommend it over Nikkor, Sigma or Tamron?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

IvanAndreevich In reply to jayars [2011-10-24 01:10:37 +0000 UTC]

Sigma 8-16 is where it's at right now, I think

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jayars In reply to IvanAndreevich [2011-10-24 02:50:24 +0000 UTC]

OK thanks. I will look at it. The Tokina 11-16mm sells for $719 now.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

IvanAndreevich In reply to jayars [2011-10-24 03:10:32 +0000 UTC]

That's expensive. I got mine for $500 barely used.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jayars In reply to IvanAndreevich [2011-10-24 03:13:59 +0000 UTC]

I will look around for a used one. The Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 did not have a good review. They say that the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 is much better.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

IvanAndreevich In reply to jayars [2011-10-24 03:20:45 +0000 UTC]

Does it really matter at f/8 or f/11? I don't think so..

Ken Rockwell says..."This Tokina 11-16mm is the world's fastest and sharpest ultrawide lens for small format digital cameras (Nikon DX and Canon 1.6x)."

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

IvanAndreevich In reply to jayars [2011-10-24 18:26:08 +0000 UTC]

I know, I read his reviews. But he's the one to point out that stopped down most of these lenses are the same. f/2.8 makes no difference whatsoever for this type of lens.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jayars In reply to IvanAndreevich [2011-10-25 00:33:35 +0000 UTC]

So you recommend to buy the Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 which sells for $699?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

IvanAndreevich In reply to jayars [2011-10-25 00:37:16 +0000 UTC]

I would, because it's 30% wider

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

jayars In reply to IvanAndreevich [2011-10-26 00:03:24 +0000 UTC]

What can you say about the cons on the Sigma 8-16mm lens?

***CA towards edges of the frame at 8mm
***Falloff at 8mm
***No way to attach filters

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

IvanAndreevich In reply to jayars [2011-10-26 19:22:00 +0000 UTC]

CA and vignetting is pretty easily corrected. Filters are a problem, I forgot about that.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jayars In reply to IvanAndreevich [2011-10-27 17:13:48 +0000 UTC]

I am ready to follow your recommendation about the Sigma 8-16mm over the Tokina 11-16mm but I saw the problem with filters on the reviews.
Maybe someone will make adapters to use filters on this type of lens.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

IvanAndreevich In reply to jayars [2011-10-27 17:37:52 +0000 UTC]

I'm sure it will vignette like crazy.. That's too bad

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jayars In reply to IvanAndreevich [2011-10-29 00:11:18 +0000 UTC]

Maybe I should stick with the Tokina 11-16mm.

IvanAndreevich In reply to dedekt [2011-10-18 16:39:09 +0000 UTC]

I usually don't use a tripod for day time shots. Photomatix can correct small shifts.
