Description This is the process of [link]

Umm...I'm not sure I should have put this in the tutorial section cause I just made this out of the few pictures I randomly saved while painting (I did not plan on showing this); and I'm just an amateur who doesn't feel qualified teaching people lol.
Honestly, the outcome of this painting feels like some kind of miraculous fluke. I can hardly recall what 'steps' I took to paint now. Nor am I confident I can do this again.

The last one is to show the few different backgrounds I tried, before I found what I was looking for. Truly, if you can't find something that works for you, just leave it and come back to it another day. Then your mind will be nice and fresh.

Anyway, what I really wanted to show with this, is that during the process,... even though your painting might look really... I mean REALLY UGLY (just look at the 5th & 6th picture!!) IT CAN TURN OUT GOOD!!!
I was extremely put off when I was in the stage of the 5th picture (just look at the juju lips!), and felt very uncertain because this was my first attempt, but woooah! Persistence is the key people!

Hope this helps. Well,... if anybody feels that this helps in any way, then please let me know haha

If anyone is interested:
Done in PS CS2.
Original size canvas I worked on was 2000 x 2405pixels.
Main brushes used were the soft round brush, stipple 43 pixels, dry brush tip light flow (which come with the programme); and then some custom brushes - great for textures.
Err... that's all I can think of. Anything else go look at other tutorials because I have just started university and will probably be too busy to write long replies.

Jacia In reply to darkbubblepop09 [2008-07-06 08:27:02 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

Um, I also used colours like blue, purple and green as well as the usual skin colours in some areas - but make it subtle, like blend them in. And use a textured brush to add some texture?

I dunno, but to me it looks like you took a picture, and slowly removed some details till you ended up with just using the sketch filter for the 'sketch'

but that's just me.

Here, I've uploaded this more convincing progress picture, showing how I painted the ear. [link]

And here's a close up of the original large picture, where you can see some imperfections: [link]

You just can't tell from the picture I uploaded here, because it's a shrunken version.

how did you made the skin so soft!

btw she reminds me of an actress back home ..

Jacia In reply to anzaichavz [2007-04-14 05:30:56 +0000 UTC]

Um.. I just used a soft air brush, lots of blending/blurring/smudging and what I felt were the right colours to go next to each other for the skin. I painted it really slowly and gradually so it turned out like this. I actually wanted the skin not to be too smooth to give it more realism, but I was also scared to make it too rough, so I just left it happy and smooth heh.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

anzaichavz In reply to Jacia [2007-04-14 20:30:46 +0000 UTC]

thanks! i really love it..

so basically every shadow or layer of skin..you put it in different layers right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jacia In reply to anzaichavz [2007-04-22 01:32:16 +0000 UTC]

No problem

Um, being the cautious person I am, it was my first attempt painting realistic skin, so I naturally used lots of new layers on top of what I'd already done to be safe. But after a while of painting and not really going anywhere, I decided to be braver and do the rest in one layer over the previous layers(which acted as a base). I found doing heaps in one layer was better for smooth blending, and really made the skin more lively.

Also to make the skin more lively, I used subtle bits of blue/turquoise/green and purple here and there.

Moral of the story - be brave!

anzaichavz In reply to Jacia [2007-04-23 01:34:27 +0000 UTC]

hehe i know how you feel
but sometimes we need to be daring..coz' or else we wont discover new things or maybe great if were not..

and yeah just using one layer..can give a smoother look..ive tried it too..

btw...love that bunny

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jacia In reply to anzaichavz [2007-04-28 11:54:04 +0000 UTC]

Oh and just another note, I tired painting over 'mistakes' rather than undoing them and the colours at the back kind of adds some interest to the colours you put on top

Hehe.. I love the bunny too. Too bad i don't think other people actually copy it onto their signatures.

This is nice. But I got a question. I know its a filter but what did u use to transform that photo in the first panel?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jacia In reply to Goldencard [2007-04-06 22:22:41 +0000 UTC]

To make a sketch out of a photo using filters:
desaturate > glowing edges > invert

The brush examples you give, the first 3, can you tell me which they were used for and the settings?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jacia In reply to dimezanime88 [2007-02-23 22:57:46 +0000 UTC]

Umm.. I'm on a library computer so I can't check; but the 1st is on low opacity and flow, 2nd and 3rd are both low opacity and flow + go to brush settings and increase the spacing to whatever you want to create texture.

your very talented. this works well as a tutorial. perhaps you should explain how you do hair. it sort of goes from...straw to realstic hair in the last two steps without a middle screen showing what you did.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Jacia In reply to AussieMum [2007-01-24 22:10:15 +0000 UTC]

Also, the brownish 'straws' I just blocked in so while painting the rest, she wouldn't be left bald. They aren't actually in the final picture.

Perhaps you would like a close up look? It has more of a painted look up close.

AussieMum In reply to Jacia [2007-01-25 00:25:11 +0000 UTC]

thats ok. it looks nice, i was just commenting that if i were to be using the tutorial..lol...as a beginner i would draw the straws in then i'd get to the final step and go...huh? what do i do to get THAT result!? *flails*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jacia In reply to AussieMum [2007-01-25 09:39:18 +0000 UTC]

Hahaa....that's almost exactly what I did...

I reached the hair, and then I was lost on how I might make it as good as the rest of the painting - but! I was brave and determined to have a go at this enormous challenge (almost there you know!).
For a while, I had considered leaving her bald
Every time something was hard, I started wishing I hadn't painted the clothing so real in the first place...

Umm mostly I just refered to the tutorials in [link] . I also stumbled across her DA account once before, but I forgot her name.
Also I found [link] useful for the eyes.

It goes from straws to hair because I didn't save a picture inbetween.
