Map imperfections is why I don't use them too much... Might have been fixed with lower raystep or stepwidth but when I've seen the estimated render time...

Yep, agreed about the heightmaps. I don't use them often either. The strange thing seems that the act differently in different renders/formula combinations. The same map will look clean and slick in one, and horrible in the next...
