Description Yesterday I took my Brother-in-law out for a lesson in landscape photography. Portraiture is more his style but as a member of a camera club he has a competition this month for landscape images.
I drove him to Portland Bill which I knew would give him the best chance of capturing something. The light was soft and diffused by clouds most of the time which made exposures easy for him. As is typical on our small island here in Britain the clouds often hug the land and break out towards the horizon. These are conditions I am very familiar with and I knew that we would get a spectacular 10 minutes when the sun passed between the cloud and the horizon.

I left him for those 10 minutes and climbed down the rock face in front of us to capture a couple of shots myself.

Ha, yeah, well put. I don't feel a stranger to you Steve, I like you. Lots of reasons for my absence from here (and from photography if I'm honest ). I think the green is too strong...... I have run out of places to go (without going miles and using up tons of time which I just don't have). Just lost motivation I guess.
It's shit and I feel guilty not doing anything, we should arrange a photography weekend on the ol' moor mate.

Thanks Phil but looking at it now I wish I shot a seperate exposure for the sun but it still works I guess.

Yeah I would feel the same way if it were my shot, as I do actually with many of my shots where the sun is a little overexposed.

Great atmosphere, lovely light. Sharpening on that cliff feels a bit soft though. Not sure if it's just my screen though. Great work anyway dude!

JakeSpain In reply to DrewHopper [2010-03-25 20:15:48 +0000 UTC]

Not your screen, salt water smears on the filter I think, tried to clean them off in between shots but if was windy and just kept happening..... enhanced by the softnessaround the edges of the canon 17 40.....

nice shot if that situation happens up here ya get a golden hue that affects the whole area did that happen here?

JakeSpain In reply to tablelander [2010-03-25 20:12:10 +0000 UTC]

No but often that happens. On this occasion the haze was too thick in the sky so any sunlight was very diminished.

great capture but I feel the image is a little rushed and could have benifited from including more of the Arch in the rock and more space to the right of the sun, maybe a group of shots stitched together to get a wider angle.

You are spot on guy, it is rushed and my position was not perfect and I should indeed have stitched.....I'm just so overjoyed to have got out and captured something.....

Weather's been better of late though, no?
Governments are just corporations now Steve and will do anything for profit and power and nothing for the good or moral future of our world. It's short term debt and long term pain.....

I had my hands full, 2 students with me.....my brother-in-law and an old friend. It was rally busy down there with cameras chattering away.....
We should get out though, I really enjoyed it.

Cornwall was brilliant but I had little time to shoot and what I did won't be going on here.....
