Description Stop the war protest, March 18th 2006.

A year after the last protest, and I'm back again for this year's march & rally. Once again, marches were taking place across the globe; I was at the one in London. Thousands of people from many different backgrounds, coming together to show solidarity against the wars being raged around the world, mainly by George Bush & Tony Blair.

I never thought George W. Bush and Tony Blair would get this much hate. Very surprising.

Fantastic shot! The way people around her are looking down and she’s staring right at the camera, very confident. Its a hopeful scene, the old generation is tired and the young girl is proud and won’t back down...its great!

There are only so many protest photos one can look at before they all begin to look tragically similar.

This one succeeds because of the composition and the eye contact. The man with his head lowered as he marches. The girl looking at the camera. The sign over her shoulder and the swarm of people behind with another sign.

I would only gripe about your choice in aperture. f/2.8 or 3.5 might have made for a more focused view on your subject matter.

Well done.

She looks like a warrior who is determined to get across her message and her point. The sign behind her is clear and adds to her confrontational appearance.

Your black and white shots are always phenomenal and I am certain that this is where your strength as a photographer lies. You always seem to grab the shots that give off most contrast and the most stark images.
This is no exception.

Fantastic work.

Another amazing capturement of social history today.

& the picture reeks of a silence so deafening (like a car crash to the deaf)

There’s an implicit sense of stasis, that almost reveres with tragedy.

I love the way the girl is surrounded by ‘adults’ as they hang their heads in dejection…lost in mourning tey look so weary as if somewhere, somehow they’ve already lost.

& yet the determination in her face juxtapositions the soft childish lines of vulnerability, the plush cherub lips and rounded nose, a child that’s seen too much and grown up to soon., the bags under her eyes unnecessarily aging her, weighted with consequence and circumstance.

Our only hope for tomorrow is held within today’s youth.

She is representative of hope, of future and of -possibility-

I find it especially interesting that her ‘sign’ rests over her shoulder, almost ‘falling’ just like the wall eventually will in the writing upon it. It’s rested surely on her shoulders, like tomorrow is rested upon her soul…poised….ready…..

I also find it worthy to note her gender, how her solidarity and steely determination is contradicting …is -challenging- the patriarchal societies which are torn by war….

She stands out, she os focused, she is determined….and yet she’s young, and she’s female.

T make a tomorrow the today has to change…

& she is the change. Vital.

A quality picture on all levels, perfect composition and the monochromatic value of it adds to its poignancy.

It's great how she's the only light spot in a mass of dark, plus she just looks angelic (as others have pointed out).
Sadly, I doubt the protests will have much of an effect :/

Oh I love this. The way she's almost looking up - determined, but somber, but catching some humanity in a protest... something which is all too often missed from pics of activism.

Her expression says it all.

Your photojournalistic style is coming along in leaps and bounds James, have you not ever thought about enrolling on a course? I know that photography is something that you do not wish to make a job out of, but you have the potential to be a very sucessful professional photographer.

A true piece of journalism is to stab the viewer with human emotion, as in the this ladies gaze.

Nice man.

This is outstanding.

Get yourself a laptop dammit!

I think a color version would be a nice addition to your local circulation.

curses on your timing! the obvious is that the subject differs from everything else, not just in prominent enlighting and attention but also in context, and that makes it soo rewarding, this dosen't just tell the story such as photojournalism does, it also ads much more, due to reasons stated earlier; and let's not forget the solid execution... as always radient work

This is a very interesting photograph. I think it's awesome how you caught all the men with their heads down but the little girl was looking straight at you. Very deep, moving image.
If they didn't have signs you'd think they were people escaping a warzone or something to that effect.

Good job james.
