Reminds me a little of the battle droids in, "The Phantom Menace," but much cooler and edgier. In one novel, Darth Vader had a series of deadly lightsaber droids designed and built to be his practice opponents. One like this would fit the bill very well.

Have you ever heard of the Iron Knights? They were mineral-based force sensitive beings who, because they were intelligent crystals, couldn't actually wield lightsabers. Thus, they were partnered with and implanted in droids in order to serve in the Jedi Order.
Back in the old order, they weren't quite accepted, but the new order needed all the help it could get...
