About the technique , do you lock the persons layer at first and then paint on top of it , or is it just paint paint paint ?

sorry i dont understand the question, i mostly paint on one layer for the portraits.

I meant , do you lock some kind of a prelimiinary layer at first so you don't paint outside the figure.I'm asking because of those nice crisp edges around the shoulders.Or maybe you put down strokes and paint right from the start on one basic layer?
