Description NOTE: Originally, these pictures were taken only as a part of my documentation and were not suppose to be published, but when eye study won a DD, I've uploaded them on request for people to roughly see how I've worked. If my intention was to make tutorial, I would have taken far better pictures.

Materials used:

~ small watercolor paper block (A5 size) (tip: if you don't work on block and use only paper, stretch it, otherwise it will curl. More watercolor paper information: [link]

~ brushes: brush no.10 (used at start to place lightest layer of watercolor), brush no. 4 (used for most of the painting), brush no. 2/0 (used for details, it's actually even thinner than gel pen stroke, so you can use white ink, white acrylics or gouache for details instead of a pen)

~ watercolors (I use liquid watercolor Ecoline) [link]

~ white gel pen for final details

Any further questions I will gladly answer, please let me know if this tutorial needs corrections or is not comprehensive enough.

Please note that this might not be the most perfect or proper way of how to approach watercolor painting, it is merely an explanation how I worked.

Thank you for your critique, very much You are right, there is a lot of paintings of eyes, it seems to be forever green type of subject for people. I made this small study with no other reason than to practice (it's what studies are for), it wasn't meant to be a piece for an exhibition. The more I was surprised about the attention it got. Also, this tutorial wasn't originally meant to be tutorial, just a painting documentation for my own purposes, but I am glad I was taking pictures while working on it

Overall

Vision

Originality

Technique

Impact

First I'll start with why this has impacted me so much. Every piece I have had the pleasure to see or critique, the eyes were the soul of the pictures. To be so nice and share one of her best techniques is a truly wonderful experience. I love the way you step work for people. So they experience the whole at the end. To me sharing such a treasure with other people is like finding out how she pulled the rabbit out of the hat, but then I would expect nothing else from this painter of portraits. She not only shares her work, she lets you into her world and shows you how it's done. I am so glad to be a small part of her world and I thank her.e.deviantart.net/emoticons/h/h… " width="15" height="13" alt="" title="Heart"/>

hey this looks great, I was wondering if you're using masking fluid though, and if you don't, my question is how can you keep the whites so untouched? learnt a lot from this btw ty for posting it.

jane-beata In reply to corilessa [2014-07-06 08:31:47 +0000 UTC]

I rarely use masking fluid, when using thin brushes, white areas can be avoided easily. I do enhance white reflections with either white gel pen, white acrylic ink or gouache, though

Thank you!

Um, how long do you need for a painting like this?
And when did you start using watercolors? (I want to give it a try since I love the effects you can make with watercolor~ <3)

Thank you - this particular one took 3 hours, but it was small (A5). I first used watercolor 10 months ago (:

Do you use wet on wet technique, or wet on dry? I'm just starting watercolor painting, and your tutorials have been really helpful and inspiring so far

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jane-beata In reply to SquirrelGirl15 [2012-09-16 18:48:44 +0000 UTC]

Mostly wet on dry, but sometimes I combine two color tones in one layer, wet on wet - especially when painting portraits. (:

Hi, I would love to know what did you use for detailing the eyebrows, eyelashes (especially the white ones)? and those blacks on eyes, were those black markers or also watercolor? Thanks! I'm still learning watercolor heee

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jane-beata In reply to HyeDaa [2012-08-15 06:22:27 +0000 UTC]

Hello, for eye browse & lashes very thin brush is the best tool (I use no. 2/0) and in this case I used nut brown ink. For white lines, white gel pen or white ink/white acrylic.

Hope this helps, have a nice day

HyeDaa In reply to jane-beata [2012-08-15 13:49:01 +0000 UTC]

Ohh and last question, should I wait for the water to dry before applying the white details? and whats a good brand of a gel pen can you recommend?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jane-beata In reply to HyeDaa [2012-08-15 14:12:29 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it is best to let the layers dry before applying final details. As for the white gel pen brand, can't really recommend any, I use the only kind they have in my artist supplies store and it's some very cheap Jell zone pen
