Description

They thought themselves mighty – the greatest seafaring civilisation the world had ever known. Their screams rose, then fell silent, as the ocean devoured them; and in those moments perhaps they knew, finally, how fragile and ephemeral they had been all along.

"A fabled sea creature, variously described as a large whale or sea turtle, that is as large as an island. The name aspidochelone appears to be a compound word combining Greek aspis (which means either "asp" or "shield"), and chelone, the turtle. It rises to the surface from the depths of the sea, and entices unwitting sailors to make landfall on its huge shell."

For fun and practice. Enjoy

Reminds me of giant land turtle boss from Shoot-Em up arcade game with playable micro-sized fighter jets, I forget the name for arcade games but it'll bring back memories playing these Arcade games, this one based on giant land turtles

Absolutely awesome. I have been looking for a "world turtle" for a card in my custom Magic the Gathering set. Would it be alright if I used this?

That is a cruel practical joke to play on a sailor...

Nice work - it has a great sense of scale to it and the textures are perfect.

This was on the cartoon series Avatar and it was one of the ancient creatures that guided the avatar on his way and advised him. Really cool. Did not realize that it had any meaning before that show. Learn something new every day.

Then what does it do? Dive and eat their drowning bodies? Or does it not entice them deliberately and simply dive unaware of the drowning sailors that were on its back?

JaniceDuke In reply to AntonChanning [2012-10-03 18:53:55 +0000 UTC]

Not sure, sort of assumed it dives and the sailors drown, or maybe it eats boats Made me want to paint A'Tuin from Discworld...

Was this made on a computer, or is it a real painting, because I really like it.

JaniceDuke In reply to ComradeOj [2012-09-20 16:45:19 +0000 UTC]

Painted on computer using a tablet. I was thinking about painting it on canvas, but this way was faster, and I need to produce a lot at the moment. I may paint one on canvas at some point to sell
