Pattern welded steel is often called damascus, but damascus can also refer to wootz steel, which is different thing.

I was confused with this sword at first considering how small the hilt is in comparison to the blade, it would look pretty unbalanced. However, I noticed that the pommel is particularly big-ish. Is the pommel a counterweight to the blade here? The reason for my asking is because this looks like it would be pretty difficult to wield with one hand!
I am obviously an amateur to this stuff, I don't even know how big this sword really even is or the actual weight, I'm asking just cus I'm curious and I LOVE swords!

Those hilt parts actually balance that sword pretty well, and as the whole weight is under kilogram, its really easy to handle.

I have been getting into blacksmithing and wanted to make a sword of similar style to yours (not as ornate). Do you have any advice you could give?

Well, I think that there is lots of books about blacksmithing and sword/knife making, in english, available. Reading some of them may give some ideas and advice and most important thing is try and make things.

Not ACCEPTABLE! Until you have carved garnets recessed in gold like from the Staffordshire Hoard I will not be satisfied!
Joking. It's really beautiful work.

Moi, aattelin kysästä, ku taitava mies oot, että onko mitään kirjoja puukkojen/miekkojen/vastaavien tekemisestä mitä suosittelisit?

En ole ihmeemmin noihin kirjoihin perehtynyt, mutta varmaan jokaisesta kirjastosta löytyy useampikin puukonteko opas. Opetushallituksen kustantama "sepän taidot" on ainakin ihan yleispätevä teos.

Mahtava värkki. Jos et ole vielä katsonut tätä youtube-pätkää niin suosittelen. Dokuentti kertoo +ULFBERH+T -miekoista. Yksi sellainen löytyy mm. Hämeenlinnan linnan museosta. www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXbLyV…

Kiitoksia. Terä on damaskoitu viikinkiajalle tyypilliseen tapaan, eli terän keskiosa on taottu kerroksittain kahdesta erilaisesta teräslaadusta. Keskiosa koostuu tässä tapauksessa kolmesta kerroksittain taotusta vartaasta, joita on eritavoin kierretty jengoille, jotta kerrokset muodostavat tuon aikakauden miekoille tyypillisen kuvion.
