This painting still inspires me with its intense sincerity and simple freedom. It's like a small icon representing the courage to create or to reach for something unreachable. It's funny how you can sometimes carry a painting in your mind for ages. Kind of like carrying these painted stars in your pocket.

I met Ian in Florida about two summers ago, and we have been in touch since. I remember him telling me about this brilliant artist that was going to do a portrait of him. He sent me a picture of the finished piece, and I couldn't believe it. You are truly brilliant. What an inspiration.

Well-rendered! Crisp and complex yet fluid.
There's a kind of Cezanne-like two-dimensional effect going on here: it looks as if Ian's "canvas" is almost the same distance from the viewer as he is. I don't know if you wanted a sense of distance between the foreground and background, but they certainly seem to be very close.

The colors and textures capture and hold the attention of the eye. I love how the character is reaching up to the night sky with a brush and painting in the stars...I know this was a commisioned work, but this holds a different meaning to me, given the name of the subject is the same as my soulmate and that we both have an affinity with stars in different ways; he by love of astronomy and me by my other name's meaning

I love the colours and the textures, and your portrait style, it's awsome. One thing though, you've got that neat thing happening with on the ground with the square patturn, but it just stops at the ground, maby it'd help bring it together if you added some of that to the sky.

wonderful... the colours, the artistry, the idea... but what i really like is just what you write in the title "Ian Paints The Stars"... that one simple concept portrayed literally just as it comes with so many more figurative, imaginative meanings... painting dreams, painting life, painting reality... and painting the stars is like doing something positive to make your dreams come true... And just as Ian paints his stars in the sky, we can reach out and paint our own stars too
