Description This is the long-promised sneak preview of my Dead Duck origin story, titled "Dead Duck Rising." The title probably came to me after seeing "Hannibal Rising," but I can't swear to it.

In this story I introduce Dead Duck's boss, J.P. Yorick, aka The Grim Reaper of less formally, Death. However, as there will likely be other stories that come out before this one featuring J.P., this won't be considered his first appearance in the grand sequence of the entire storyline.

Just a little back story here: J.P. is the head honcho of R.I.P. Inc. (located in the heart of Rigormortitropolis, City of the Dead), the big business that handles, well, death. J.P. runs the whole operation for the head office and sends his minions out into the fields to collect souls of the deceased and bring them back to be processed to their respective destinations.

And before I get a slew of questions from Muppet fans, yes, J.P. Yorick draws SOME inspiration from Jim Henson's old Sam and Friends character, Yorick. It's just enough to be a homage and not a rip-off, in my view. His first name, J.P., is borrowed from, well, myself. My full name is Jay Patrick Fosgitt, and my mom always intended people to call me J.P., but nobody ever picked up on that, so I've always been just Jay. So that's why I slapped that moniker on Yorick.

So when's this story going to be featured in an actual store-bought comic? The damn if I know. I haven't the money to self publish these days, but I have other options available to me if I choose to go that route. But rest assured that when the comic does come out in whatever form and at whatever time, you'll all be the first to know, and you'll be able to read this story to it's conclusion and know the truth of Dead Duck's origin. I promise not to pull a job like Marvel Comics and wait thirty years to release a character's origin, ala Wolverine (and then STILL monkey around with it after the fact).

Jay, you won't believe that now I'm looking at these sneak peek! And found that you named Hans Christian Andersen! Not "Anderson", but people name it like that do not know why! Hahaha .Well, I attend to "his" school in Argentina, a school name like him and all of that!

Just wanted to tell you

Oh man! I never realized I made that mistake! Crap! Thanks for letting me know so I can correct it for future prints of Dead Duck!

Jay--

It's okey. I think I'm the only one who realized that! Just google it and you will find how to spell it When I put Anderson, google didn't correct me, so it could be that you can spell it the two ways. Really do not know!

No, I checked, and you're correct. It IS spelled Andersen. I went and corrected it in my Dead Duck files, so hopefully I can sell a corrected edition one day. I'm finding lots of coloring mistakes and a couple typos now that I look at the book. Sigh...

The thing thats always has attracted me to Jay's page art is how busy it is. It is total eye candy. He packs a panel and give s you your money's worth. I'm reminded of those splash pages of Sergio Aragonies in old MAD magazines. I would pour over those pages looking at his lines and sight gags. His style is totally different than anyone else whose work I enjoy.

Thanks! That's Chizzle, a character who I used in my original Dead Duck comic from around 1994. He was a minion like Dead Duck but a lot more bumbling. Also, the guy shooting pool in the background was another minion in my old Dead Duck comic, named Lank. Just some trivia for ya!

I almost didn't catch the Yorick ref, until someone else commented on it... damn, got to love a guy that still gives homage to the classics!

Hope to hear that this comes out for purchase soon, Jay! I'd recommend one venue you might try: Lulu.com. A few artists have produced sketchbook collections and comics through their services... I've even published my first novel through them. ^_^

Keep sharing with us, my friend!

Actually, I'm giving serious thought to publishing through Lulu. They printed some copies of my children's book for me last year and did an excellent job. It's definitely a possibility! Did you get your novel out to very many people through Lulu?

Not yet... I can't afford the larger ISBN/Distribution package, but my book is prepped so that when I have the funds, I can get that plugged in and on the way. Right now, I'm doing it mostly by word of mouth.

your morbid exposition effects me so that my nipples could etch marble.

that's pure genius!

really cool story thus far. I also like the death guy's thought balloon in the last panel of the first page. that was funny.

I love somebody who can do good comics, I always find their layout a difficulty but this is fantastic, and the greyscale colouring probably look better than if it was in full colour.
And speaking of layout I admire the flashback scene with its panels within panels and that one swooping duck that overlaps.

Wait a minute, "Duck"? Could it be...!?

Thank you for the kind appraisal! Layout is still tricky for me, so I appreciate your words. And good eye catching the ducks on the page. Coincidence? Hey, I'll never tell! Guess we'll see when the book comes out!

I'd kill to have your character designing skills (I wouldn't kill you, of course, but you know what I mean). And I love how you fashioned Yorick after the oft-forgotten Muppet of the same name. More, please!

JayFosgitt In reply to CurseReaper [2007-07-13 13:03:43 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I should have mentioned that the wench and the overall style of the flashback pages are drawn in a sort of Vaughn Bode tribute style (check out this link if you're not sure who I'm talking about: [link] ). I drew those pages out using a brush marker, which hopefully gives that flowing, varied line width look that Bode did so well. Anyhoo, glad you liked it!
