Description Happy fanart friday!

I went out for my mum's bday, then I went back to working on some music compositions and lost track of time. I suddenly remembered about fanart friday about...2 hrs ago? XD

Anyway, this is my rendition of Mitsuru from Persona 3. She is such a strong character and I can really relate. She has so much on her plate and hardly has any time for herself because she's too busy running around looking after everyone else XD

Scrapped later because I came up with a better concept whilst drawing this and I'll improve it later.

Ok so it's technically Saturday now but it's still deemed Friday on my scale okay?! D8

Oh man, I'm a huge fan of the Persona series (and the Shin Megami Tensei series in general). I got hooked on the original way back on the Playstation, and I've played Persona 2: Eternal Punishment and Persona 3. I've got Persona 4, but haven't really had a chance to play it yet.

I want to play P2 but I don't think it was released here...or maybe it was and it was just an obscure game that it never saw the light of day lol.

P4 is amazing, I think you'll enjoy it if you've played and liked P3! Let me know if you do get round to play it hehe!

I've got Lucifer's call but I've yet to play it and the Digital Devil series seem really interesting but again, I've yet the time fully play it T_T

GabrielGadfly In reply to JDWasabi [2012-02-02 18:28:47 +0000 UTC]

Okay, story time. It's a little complicated. There are actually two games called Persona 2. The first, Persona 2: Innocent Sin came out in Japan in 1999, but wasn't released in the US. Its sequel, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment came out in both Japan and US in 2000.

Innocent Sin didn't get imported because of content concerns -- it contains quite a few references to Nazis, and there was the option of a homosexual romance between the protagonist and another male character. Back in '99 that was a big deal.

The two games take place in parallel worlds, called This Side (Innocent Sin) and The Other Side (Eternal Punishment). Basically, a bunch of bad things happen on This Side, and at one point in the story, a wish is made that resets everything, so The Other Side is the "what if that stuff never happened" storyline -- no one remembers the events of This Side, except for Innocent Sin's protagonist, Tatsuya. It's a really complex story, and I think American gamers lost out on a lot of it by not being able to play Innocent Sin.

There's good news, though! Last September, Atlus released a port of Innocent Sin for the PSP. I believe they censored a bit of the Nazi references, but the game is otherwise the same.

No way that sounds like an amazing concept!

I'm really happy that they're releasing a lot of old titles for the PSP, I've been waiting to play Chrono Cross for 10 years and now the chance has finally come. It really sucks that the EU misses out on a lot of titles

Can't wait to actually dig into more Atlus games, I really love their dark stories XD. Now, to actually own my PSP is another thing entirely ...(I'm borrowing it from a friend at the moment XD).

Eh really?! Great! I really wasn't thinking ...perhaps this is a sign that Fanart Friday is finally paying off and slowly levelling up my drawing ability?

This character is from the game Persona 3. In this world, several charas have the ability to summon 'Persona's they're like monsters based on their psyche. The main character has the ability to summon several Personas and fuse them so s/he is very special (the latest remake of the 3rd game features a girl character: my first fanart friday upload lol). Think Pokemon XD

But what makes the story really awesome (and dark) is that for the characters to summon their Personas, they'd need to technically shoot themselves in the head with their 'Evokers', the concept is that in order summon Personas, the characters needed to reach the stage of empty-mindedness similar to death in order to summon them and use their Personas' powers. This in turn relates to the story which involves how people view death, sacrifice and a lot of dark situations that makes me love the story. Especially how the characters have to come to terms with using their power to help others.

Woah sorry for the wall of text! I tried to make it as brief as possible XD I hope you weren't offended by that concept

It does. It's nice to see little details like that included, they do make a difference. ^_^

Sounds like an interesting concept. Thinking about it I'm surprised I've not heard more about that series before, normally Dave looks at a lot of RPG news and has played some pretty obscure ones so I'm not sure why he hasn't mentioned those ones (he often talks about new RPGs with me, I like them too although he's played more than me, I tend to watch him play them while I sew). I'll mention them to him.

Oooh do so!! I can vouch that the Persona series is definitely on par with the RPG juggernauts like Final Fantasy (in my opinion but not the newer ones hehe). Great story, well written, interesting characters, AMAZING SOUNDTRACK Here's a link to the original op since I can't stop mysel [link]

That's awesome! Do you play RPGs yourself though? Any faves?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lil-Samuu In reply to JDWasabi [2012-02-02 21:15:07 +0000 UTC]

Dave says that it's a case of simply not having gotten around to the series so maybe one day.

I do play them myself, I tend to play the ones on the portable systems (e.g. the DS or, before that, the GBA) when I play them on my own. When Dave plays them and I watch I'll sometimes help (for example help him make choices or solve puzzles) so we kinda play those together.

The Tales series is definitely one of my favourites, and one of Dave's too, as is the Zelda series. I like what I've played of the Fire Emblem series. I'm not sure if you'd count Mass Effect or not but that's also a series we both like. And Shenmue, that series really needs to be finished. The Grandia series was really good and Lost Odyssey wasn't bad at all. Dave's played most of the Final Fantasy series, some of which I liked, some of which I was less fussed about. (I'm probably missing some there but those are the ones that come to mind off the top of my head).

Ahahah yay! I only know rpg games on the ps2 which is not that many titles sadly. I've heard a lot of good things about Mass Effect, I shall play it one day! Shenmue I only played a bit round my Uncle's if I remember correctly but I really liked it! I never really got into Zelda because I was a playstation kid >D.

Grandia is AWESOME even though I've only played the 2nd game. Ryudo is so funny XD My close friend harks and raves about Lost Odyssey so I should play that soon at one point lol. Yeh I'm not too sure about the Final Fantasy series at the moment...it's hard to say since they've had great and crap titles >_>.

Lil-Samuu In reply to JDWasabi [2012-02-09 19:10:22 +0000 UTC]

There are some pretty good games on the PS2. Have you played any of the Atelier Iris series? Dave's not finished it yet but he liked what he played of Rogue Galaxy too.

Looking forward to Mass Effect 3. ^_^ I like the kinda openness of the game and the fact that there's an interesting mix of characters.

It's a shame that Shenmue's not been ported to some of the newer machines (maybe as a download title), as the first one was only on the Dreamcast it feels like maybe more people should be able to give it a go. It was the little things like being able to buy the toys from gachapon/gashapon that gave it that little something extra. Although some of the exact timing button presses could be a bit tricky.

The first Grandia's worth playing too if you get the chance (I'm not sure how rare the PS1 discs are now but it's also available for download on the Playstation store). I'll always remember playing the start of that, the little quest at the beginning appealed to me (I won't spoil it in case you do decide to play it).

Lost Odyssey kinda feels like a really good Final Fantasy-style RPG. The way the main character's story is told within it is interesting and there's some really good characters in there. Plus some of the music's beautiful (there's a wonderful piece called "A Sign of Hope" in the soundtrack for example). ^_^

I guess it's best with the Final Fantasy series to look at each one individually, especially as a series as a whole because the earlier ones are so different from the newest. I know it's a spin-off rather than a main series game but I really liked Chocobo Tales.

Yes! I've played the Atelier Iris series but I swear they just get slightly worse each time. I'm struggling to finish the 3rd game because I don't find the gameplay fun.... I kinda just wanted to play the story lol >_< Rogue galaxy looks interesting but I've yet to start it. I'll let ya know when I start playing that! 8D

Aaah I've heard of Shenmue, my friend was telling me about how it imitates life right down to missing a bus XD. From what I played it was a really good game even though I can't remember the story. I agree that it's a shame that older titles gets forgotten into oblivion, I'd love to play it if I can!

My other friend has lent me Grandia 1, I shall play it soooon!!! I'm also borrowing Legend of Dragoon too, must play that soon too! Urgh so many games to play!!

I've played up to the first disc of Lost Odyssey and I've enjoyed it so far. Aah tell me about it! I managed to download the OST, several songs are just so nice! As expected by the great Uematsu ;D.

I've only played the Chocobo game on the DS (can't remember the title) and that was pretty fun! Might dig it out and play it again now XD

And hooray for the JRPG love!

That's one of the advantages of watching Dave play RPGs I guess, I can watch the story parts and when he's having to battle a lot to level up or whatever I can do something else if it gets a bit dull. ^_^

Yeap, you can buy stuff from the vending machines and all sorts of little things like that. The story wasn't anything absolutely amazingly original or anything but it wasn't bad and it fit with the game well. It's actually still unfinished, the second game finished without finishing the story. I don't know if the chap who wrote them will ever go back and finish the series but it'd be nice if he did.

Cool. ^_^ I hope that you enjoy Grandia 1. I think it's a fun game personally. ^_^ Neither Dave nor I have played Legend of Dragoon, another one we've managed to miss.

Dave and I loved the music from Lost Odyssey so much we ended up playing one of the pieces of music from it at our wedding. (We decided that we wanted something instrumental, something from a game but something that wouldn't necessarily sound like game music if that makes sense, "A Sign of Hope" fit perfectally ). But yeah, he manages to compose music that fits so well with the games he writes the music for doesn't he? Adds a lot to the atmosphere of those games I think.

Chocobo Tales was on the DS, it's the one with lots of mini-games and a really fun card game in it. Is that the one you've played?

Indeed. ^_^ So many good games.

JDWasabi In reply to Lil-Samuu [2012-02-18 04:48:11 +0000 UTC]

No way!! You actually played a song from a game at your wedding! That's amazing! Nobuo Uematsu still inspires me to this day, I've always wanted to write music for games XD. Saying that, I'm uploading some music I've written on to Youtube (as par my last poll) so I'm slowly integrating my works into all my accounts ^ ^;;.

Ack I can't remember which Chocobo game it was...I'm pretty certain it's the Chocobo tales game that you've mentioned as I remember it being all mini game based with the cut out paper art style...I could be wrong XD

Shame about Shenmue, I remember it being interesting when I played it...will have to look it up!

ooh ohoh, have you played the Kingdom Hearts series?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lil-Samuu In reply to JDWasabi [2012-02-19 19:57:58 +0000 UTC]

We actually played three pieces of music that were originally from video games at our wedding. Two of them were orchestrated versions rather than the original ones from within the games but yeah, all based music that originally was in a game. When Dave and I discussed what music we wanted to play at the ceremony instrumental game music just seemed to fit to us so that's what we went with. Not that everyone at the wedding realised that it was game music but we knew. ^_^

Writing music for games sounds like a great goal to have, really creative. Having the right music, and good music, can really add to a game and give it that something extra that makes the experience all the more enjoyable. ^_^

That's the one, mini games with paper cut out style art. ^_^ I loved the way it was made to look like a pop up book, that was a lovely little touch I thought.

Dave's played some of the first Kingdom Hearts but he didn't finish it. Might go back to it at some point though, although he says he doesn't look forward to having to deal with the respawning enemies in it again. XD

Oh my god that's seriously so romantic and nerdy!!! Such a wonderful idea! It shows both your passions without freaking anyone out I guess XD

Thank you! I've been doing research here and there for game audio and I have to say that it's incredibly tough >_<. Film music is slightly easier because you're writing to a static 'path' but in a dynamic setting of a game that's a different nut(shell) all together XD It takes a long time but I know that if I keep chipping away at working on elements of game audio (like audio in a film setting) and writing more music I'll get better with each step!

Yeh! The style of that game is brilliant. Really makes you feel nostalgic about your childhood and how old cartoons really did seem like magic <3

Haha yeh, KH is a bit of a button masher game but I can vouch that the story is amazing

Lil-Samuu In reply to JDWasabi [2012-03-06 19:28:59 +0000 UTC]

XD ^_^ No one asked "what on earth was that music you were playing?", although we did get a few "that music was nice" comments so I think our choices were good (the most important thing was that we liked the music anyways ^_^ ). We had fun making joke suggestions with each other while we were thinking about which music to play too.

That makes sense, that the music playing in a game has to adapt to what's happening as someone's playing through it but a film always stays the same so the music doesn't need to change depending on what the person/people watching it do. Good luck for achieving your goal, and I hope you have a lot of fun writing music. ^_^

I like the way it kinda makes the books come alive. Plus the artwork's rather charming. ^_^ I have a feeling I'm going to have to play it again some time now I've thought about it, especially the card game bit. ^_^

I think it'll be a while before he plays it now, he's playing Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Mass Effect 3's out soon so I suspect they might take priority.

^-^

Thank you so much! I've been researching on and off for writing music for dynamic play, it's pretty interesting with some theories that are presented! It's film theory yet game theory melded into one that sometimes give you brain hurt for the more conceptual ones XD

Yeh me too! The mini games were surprisingly fun to play ;D

Oooh how's FFXIII-2? I've heard FFXIII is simply put 'rubbish' >_<. Which is a shame since I'm a huge FF fan (at least for the older titles) and I don't have the latest console to play it on XD. Mass Effect...! I really want to play it because I've heard so many good things about it too. Urgh...need more money and most of all time to play all these! >_<

Lil-Samuu In reply to JDWasabi [2012-03-12 19:22:36 +0000 UTC]

Chocobo Tales is one of those simple but it works well because it's simple sorta games isn't it? (A bit like, say, Loco Roco). One of the examples of mini games working well which is nice, as it feels like sometimes games like that are put together without much thought but yeah, that one I liked at lot. ^_^ Some of the Rabbids mini game games are good too, been a long time since I played those but I used to be really good at a couple of the games on that.

The way you include monsters in your party feels a bit like Tales of Symphonia 2. So far Dave says he's enjoying it, that it feels a bit different to some of the other Final Fantasy games, that it feels better than XIII so far although he also says he gets the feeling that it may be short and it isn't an instant favourite. Not bad to pick up and play for a bit then put down again in between other games, which is good as he's just started Mass Effect 3. ^_^

So far so good with Mass Effect 3, although Dave's not gotten very far through it. Lots of the characters are back again which is nice. I hope that if you do get the chance to play the Mass Effect series one day that you enjoy it. ^_^

I have so many games to play still, even though I bought most of them from years ago. Gah, so many games...so little time! I will give the ME series a proper go soon as I've been hearing a lot of good things for the Sound design at least

Thanks for the recommendation!

Crazy fun minigames with insane rabbit things, it just works so well doesn't it?

I really like Loco Roco. The concept's simple, the character rolls around and you control the ground by tilting it with the shoulder buttons rather than controling the character, but it's a very charming game (the songs in it are catchy and the noises the Loco Rocos make are rather cute) and it's a lot of fun to play. ^_^

Mini games could be fun, and a nice way to add in a few light hearted moments too if you put the right sorta games in the right places. Sounds like a good plan.

Know the feeling. ^_^; Between us Dave and I have so many games we want to play that we've not gotten around to yet. Although it is lovely to have so much choice.

The way the characters interact in Mass Effect is another aspect of the series that makes it good too I'd say. Dave's been playing more of the third one and some of the conversations have made me actually laugh out loud. ^_^ Mordin in particular is just priceless at times. Some of the music is pretty good. There's something slightly catchy about the map theme for example.

Some good news about Shenmue by the way: apparently there's going to be a HD remake of the first two released at some point.

I haven't played Loco Roco D: That's on the PSP right? If I ever do invest in it (or borrow a friend's) I'll play it....one day! XD I really like the art style to it and I have heard the soundtrack to it is very nice indeed!

SPEAKING OF MASS EFFECT. I recently got a new laptop to share with my mum. It's powerful enough to handle gamage so I can actually start playing ME at least via Steam!

OOOOO do you know which console they'll be releasing the Shenmue remakes on? OOO that's awesome I can't wait! I really liked it from what I played XD

Lil-Samuu In reply to JDWasabi [2012-04-02 18:37:50 +0000 UTC]

The Loco Roco games are on the PSP, yeap. There's three on there and a sorta minigame Loco Roco game on the PS3 too. I like the art style too, it's very charming and you've heard right, the soundtrack's great. The Loco Rocos all sing in a made up language and they all have their own little songs which are very catchy. ^_^ It's one of those soundtracks you find yourself humming tunes from.

Cool. ^_^ I hope that you enjoy the games. It's worth bothering with the random conversations, particularly with the people who can become/do become part of your team for some of the rather amusing dialogue. (Random top tip: keep talking to Mordin in Mass Effect 2, one of the conversations you can have with him when he reveals a random fact about something he did in his past is great. I don't want to spoil it, I think you'll know it when you find it though).

Dave's made some progress in Mass Effect 3 now. Not 100% happy with everything they've done but that could be me being picky (don't really want to talk about any details because it involves big spoilers). But there's still lots of witty dialogue and great characters so, so far, I can't complain too much.

I'm not sure if it's been announced yet, I would assume it'll probably be a downloadable thing on the consoles, that'd make sense. A lot of the news that seems to be going around about it is mainly rumours, it doesn't sound like Sega have officially said much about it yet which is a shame, even just an offical vague release date'd be nice.

It's very cute. ^_^ At the end of the levels all of the Locorocos you've collected pile up on one another and sing which is rather adorable. The yellow ones are the cutest I think but the others are nice as well. There's probably videos on Youtube if you wanted to see how cute it is. The main theme of the Yellow Locorocos is called "Bu Bu Poruche" on the soundtrack if that helps you find them, the different level tunes are sung by the Locorocos too.

Personal favourite in the series is the second Mass Effect, and Dave says he thinks that's probably his favourite too, but the others are pretty good as well. Just some minor things I'm being picky about along with the ending that made me like Mass Effect 3 less than 2. I can see why people didn't like the ending and I'm not surprised that it's been announced that there'll be a bit of extra DLC to add more to it. But yeah, don't let it put you off the series, as a series as a whole it's very good.

Yeah, I think it's going to be a case of just being patient for Shenmue. One day though, one day... ^_^

It is a rather cute song isn't it? ^_^ If you like that one you might like the version of "Locoroco's Song" that's sung by the yellow Locorocos too (there's a version of that song for each of the types of Locoroco). It's nice how each type of Locoroco has their own distinctive type of voice that they sing in, it adds to the character of the game. ^_^

No problem.
